Pre-paid cell phone
I want to get one for Fred. He can't call out to LI from the phone in Jamaica. I'm sure he would want to.
Any idea how I get one or how much they cost?

Re: Pre-paid cell phone
I think my mother has something with AT&T or another regular carrier. She pays $25 every 3 months but it will refresh automatically if she exceeds her minutes before the 3 months are up.

Re: Pre-paid cell phone
My parents both have the Verizon one.
My dad just walked into the Verizon store on his lunchbreak & signed up for it.
If you keep renewing it, the minutes are cumulative, and the phone tells you have any minutes you have ( my mother loves telling me she can "only" talk for 2714 minutes )
My dad used to have to go to the Verizon store to renew, but I think now it automatically deducts from his debit card or something like that.
ETA- they seem to have 2 diffent plans now. THe one my parents have is now $50 for 350 minutes a month. My in-laws have a differnt one, but don't know which one.

Re: Pre-paid cell phone
I have virgin mobile and it's great. they have monthly plans and you can buy top up cards to pay for your balance, you can use paypal or your bank account as well.
I really recommend it.

I don't think Fred could navigate one right now. I'm thinking of just adding a phone to his already existing plan that his son is using. The phone would be free and it would cost about $40/month. he will need it anyway down the road.

I have virgin mobile and I agree. You can buy the phone and the top up cards at Target.
For his situation, I'd recommend that you use the top up cards, rather than linking the phone to a credit card. It's not unusual that phones walk away or have lots of calls made on them in such facilities.
