Pre School for Speech Delay
DS just turned 3 and has been approved through CPSE. He was in regular pre school with a SEIT, Speech and OT. His speech is the thing that is dragging him down. Packages are being sent to:
ICCD (Mineola), HASK, Little Village and Variety (in Wantagh). I just read a post that there is Dutch Lane in Hicksville? Do they have an excellent speech and language program. We live on the south shore of western Nassau so we prefer4 south shore but willign to consider N. Shore. He also needs to be in an integrated classroom. Are any of you familiar with any of the schools I mentioned? Any experiences? Are there any schools I have missed? Thank you

Re: Pre School for Speech Delay
It's going to be up to the school if they are willing to put him in the integrated class. My DS was put in self-contained and only receives speech because his speech when he started was minimal enough that they didn't think he'd be able to respond to questions/sing songs, etc. in the integrated. If the speech delay is severe (as in if he cannot say the names of all the other students in the class, read along with the books and songs, etc, you would not be placed in an integrated in his school).
I wasn't sure if it was the right decision at the time, but I do now believe that the smaller class (a 12:1:1 self contained, as opposed to a 14:1:1 integrated in his school) was right for him. I could move to integrated now mid-year because of his progress, but am holding off til next year to minimize the changes for him.
We're in Suffolk. I'm in a district that is generous with special needs packages, but I think most would cut out his SEIT once he is in a special needs school unless he has a physical disability. My district would probably make the case for a 4-hour preschool if he is getting pulled out for 2 services (depending on the number of times per week for speech and OT...my son gets speech 3x a week, but only speech, so he is in a 2.5 hr program. if you child is pulle dout 6x a week for a total of 3 hours, they may want the 4 hour program to give him more classroom time for that exposure).
