Pregnant and DX with diabeties

My SIL who is due in July was diagnosed with diabetes. Her baby has it too. They found out because the baby was bigger than appeared. Is this dangerous? I don't know what she is planning on doing?

Re: Pregnant and DX with diabeties

gestational diabetes?? if this is the case, and the baby is just big then his/her sugars will probably regulate in the first 48 hours and the baby will be fine. as for mom when she delivers she SHOULD go back to normal as well.Chat Icon

eta: i had it with all three pregnancies and just watched my diet.. now i am hypoglycemic.. low blood sugarChat Icon my baby's were big.

Re: Pregnant and DX with diabeties

I had gestational diabetes when I was pregnant and Emily was born big -- 9lbs 10 oz. I did try very hard to keep my sugars under control during the pregnancy but she was a big baby anyway. However, she doesn't have diabetes now --- so just because the mother has it it doesn't mean that the baby has it also.

Sometimes pregnancy just makes it hard for some women to process the sugars in their body .... and the baby might grow bigger when they are born, but it usually stabalizes itself and the babies are fine.

Re: Pregnant and DX with diabeties

I talked with my SIL tonight and she is pretty upset. She went to a dietician, she use to be one herself. She has always been very fit and watched what she eats. Now being pregnant she exercises and still watches her diet so she was really shocked when she got the news. Her Grandfather has it and I told her I think she got it because she was pregnant. She thinks she is having a big baby not because of the diabetes but because she was 8 something when born and her DH was 10 lbs! I told her she will probably have a C-section. She is also worried that the baby will be premature.
