Re: Pregnant mom arrested for a sandwich
Bottom line she forgot to pay for a sandwich, was it wrong sure but was it done on purpose I totally dont think so. Does any one have any mercy or compassion anymore! It really is crazy. I dont know how she kept it together while someone took her child from her I know she had to but man i think I would have killed the security guard!! And please not eating in the stores.....give me a break!!

The story is absurd. If they really wanted to make a point, they should have arrested just one of the parents so the child wouldn't be taken by the state.

This is insane! I think that this was an honest mistake. And to whoever thinks that this woman should not have been eating in a supermarket, I get your point but I think that this was an extreme circumstance.

I feel like there is more to the story than what's being presented.
Outside of the deli guy offering you a slice of cold cuts, I don't think people (kids included) should be eating in supermarkets.
thats what i am saying....
and ITA...dont eat in the supermarkets.
I worked in one for years as a kid and i remember throwing away wrappers for candy, cookies, cheese and milk that people had eaten and "said" they would pay for when leaving but somehow they ended up on the shelves....
ITA
Being pregnant or not doesn't really change anything IMO

Re: Pregnant mom arrested for a sandwich
$5 for TWO chicken salad sandwiches? Maybe I should move to Hawaii...
A few weeks ago I accidentally left BRU with a pair of clearance sunglasses that got wedged in the corner of the cart. I forgot all about them and then didn't notice them while I was checking out b/c I had a few big diaper and wipes boxes that the cashier scanned right from my cart.
A security guard saw them as I walked out (obviously is trained to look for these things) and I felt like an ***. I'm sure he thought I was stealing and maybe let me off the hook b/c I was so pregnant. I can't imagine how I would have felt if I had been arrested and my DS taken. It would have been traumatic to say the least!
I guess these stores just need to make judgement calls. In my case I had just spent like $200 and the glasses were $1.50- it would be stupid for me to steal but eh you never know- some people just get off on the rush of it I guess.

Yes, also that shows BS that they didn't know the child would be taken. Once the cop told them that the supermarket still had the chance to only arrest one parent.

I'm surprised they did this from a liability standpoint. The mom was visibly pregnant. What if spending the night in jail AFTER they offered to pay for the sandwich caused her to miscarry?
She broke the law. If you have a medical issue while in jail you can still get treatment.
I don't see any liability issues here.
I'm just saying they could have taken her money and banned her from the store for a year. No need to detain her and separate her from her child. Especially if she truly sounded like she just forgot to pay.
And while they didn't restrain her, I know I personally would be devastated if I had to go to jail for a night, and have a police record. I thought extremely stressful situations are not good for pregnancy (though I don't know since I've never been pregnant).

thats what all criminals say...it was a mistake....
yes, it was a $5 sandwich but maybe if she had walked out with a $10 roast beef or something else, then should turn their head also?
they bought $50 worth of groceries.
i think in this case it was just an honest mistake.
the store took it a bit far in my opinion.

Re: Pregnant mom arrested for a sandwich
I am sorry but that is just INSANE! I mean come on...to take the other child away, for a total of $5.00. Really....what if it really was an HONEST mistake????
And to not eat while shopping....I don't see the big deal. As an ADULT i dont eat while food shopping, but DD does. It her thing...we put the bananas in the cart and she has to have one and pay when we leave...and YES, I keep the banana peel! Also, its stop n shop and we scan everything as we shop anyway, so techinically I am paying for it. I have even ASKED employees that are in the store if its ok and they always say...go ahead, no problem.
So please...this was a little harsh IMO.
I dont see the big deal. SHE FORGOT!

Re: Pregnant mom arrested for a sandwich
If they refused to pay or tried to run away or something... I could possibly understand.
But they were cooperating and offered to pay it back... they should have just let them pay it back (with interest if they wanted) and still banned them for a year if they didn't trust them and/or want their business.
But involving the cops/the cops being so crazy about the situation AND taking away the daughter is totally unacceptable.

The fact that they purchased $50 in groceries makes me think it was an honest mistake...
EVEN if it wasn't and was intentional...this never should have happened. A child had to be taken away from her parents b/c of this???
Such a freaking injustice. There are crackhead parents out there doing far worse who don't have this happen and over a $5 sandwich they have to go through this...disgusting.

Unbelievable And hey, I don't eat in supermarkets but so many people do and I would never expect any of them to be ARRESTED for forgetting to pay for a sandwich.

Re: Pregnant mom arrested for a sandwich
Years ago a similar incident happened to a friend of mine.
She was shopping with her 2 kids and a friend of one of the kids. The cart was full of groceries. (A weeks worth of stuff.) She said to the the cashier DONT FORGET THE BAG OF DOG FOOD UNDERNEATH THE CART. She pays for the groceries to the tune of well over $200 and exits the store. Upon which she is met with security and accused of stealing the bag of dog food. Cops are called and my girlfriend is arrested for shoplifting. The cops tried to get the store to not press charges but the store manager refused. Said she stole the dog food and that was that.
I know that she was either found innocent or that the charges were dropped but I dont recall exactly when this happened. (If she ever went to court etc). But what I do know that it came down to the fact that they couldnt prove indent.
I cant tell you how many times I have accidentally NOT paid for an item due to one of my children.

Re: Pregnant mom arrested for a sandwich
UNBELIEVABLE!
A SANDWICH...Are you kidding me? To have a person suffer through that over a sandwich?!?! I hope she sues them, and I dont care who disagrees , that is RIDICULOUS!
If that was me, and my kid was traumatized from that incident, I would be livid, I would seriously do bad things....
Just insane , people are just insane.

I agree- I would make them pay for the sandwiches and send them off. Maybe ban them from the store or something, but involving the police and Child Welfare services at that level is a little nuts.

They paid $50 in groceries already. I totally think it was an honest mistake!
This story is ridiculous! I can't even imagine my child(ren) being taken away because of an accident (IMO).

Re: Pregnant mom arrested for a sandwich
This story is horrible. I have been that pregnant woman who caught herself a little too late in the supermarket and feeling like I was going to pass out if I didn't eat something. I grabbed a pre-made sandwich from the deli section. Granted I paid for it, but really? This makes a criminal?

You're wrong about that one pal, it's the stress that could cause you to miscarry!

Re: Pregnant mom arrested for a sandwich
The mere fact that it escalated to the point where a chld was taken away from her parents is just disgusting
I would be flipping the fluck out if someone took my child over a $2.50 sandwich!
That is just pure insanity on Safway's part...shame on them for doing this.
I really believe their intent was to pay for the sandwich - they already bought $50 in items.

Stress has been known to be a CONTRIBUTING factor to miscarriage but it's a huge leap to say a store that is arresting a person for theft caused a miscarriage.
As I said I'm sure there is more to the story than what's being reported. But what no one is disputing is she walked out without paying for food.

Exactly. Stress can lead to a heart attack, so I guess that means that no one ever should be arrested.

But that is usually chronic stress, isn't it? But with pregnancy, one hugely stressful event could cause a miscarriage, couldn't it? My original point was that I think they could have reprimanded her in a similar way (making her pay and banning her from the store, even filling out a report) without separating her from her child and making her spend the night in jail. I think the way they handled it made the whole situation way more stressful than it needed to be. How many times does a kid who shoplifted in a mall actually go to jail? Don't they just call the parents? (Not that I know since I've never shoplifted, just assuming).
