PreK Moms and Homework Question
Are your children bringing home homework? I know school just started and every teacher is different and its only PreK but DD has only had one assignment for homework to write her name and thats it. I'm a bit surprised being that last year in nursery school she brought home worksheets everyday and had a few worksheets given on friday for every weekend. This weekend no Homework, today no homework, last week homework only one day. She practices writing her name, worksheets, numbers, letters everyday with me (as much as I can do with her) - but just curious as to whats the norm....

Not yet. Last year when DD was in pre-k it didn't start until after Christmas and it was only over the weekend.

Re: PreK Moms and Homework Question
Our Pre-K gives homework, however, it isn't mandatory. Some kids hand it in...some don't. I make DD do it, because I want to prepare her for Kindergarten as best as possible, but it's nice that they make it optional.

Re: PreK Moms and Homework Question
We get a packet on Friday that is due back by Wednesday. Actually...I was surprised by this the first time, as I didn't realize that they give homework in pre-k!

Re: PreK Moms and Homework Question
When my son was in preK last year, they only had homework once a week. They had to write three words that began with whatever letter of the week it was and find something for show and tell with that letter. Very simple. Perfect for PreK - I felt. I don't think they need a lot at that age. They get enough when real school starts.

Re: PreK Moms and Homework Question
My DS is in his second week of pre-k and has had no HW.. kinda disappointed~! I really wouldn't mind doing some work at home with him to know what they are learning in class.. It's kind of a mystery so far..lol

Re: PreK Moms and Homework Question
DD is in PreK and at open house last night they told us they will have some homework maybe once a week - sometimes not every week.

Same with Kerri's Pre K. We do it even though it is optional.

Re: PreK Moms and Homework Question
I'm a PK teacher & I give HW once a week (given on Monday & due Fri). It is a letter sheet where they color, cut & paste 4 of that week's letter words and trace over the letter.
In January I start giving HW 2x a week.
I hear both sides...I wish there was more HW or HW in PK??!

Re: PreK Moms and Homework Question
No and I'm glad. Plenty of time for HW, I wouldn't want to see it starting now (and I'm a teacher.)

Re: PreK Moms and Homework Question
I personally think that worksheets in pre-k is entirely inappropriate.
My ds never had homework until November of kindergarten.

Re: PreK Moms and Homework Question
my ds' teacher said 1 or 2 times a week but i haven't seen it yet. i have mixed feelings, i think it can be good practice but it shouldn't be manditory.
i taught special ed pre-k for 4 years and i sent home packets that the parents could work on or not work on. i realize life is hectic and every child and famliy is different. the parents are the best judges of what their children should do.
i did send home bigger projects that were only for fun family time and gave 1 month to complete if parents wanted to (i.e. decorating a turkey or snow man). show and tell was also a big hit and most of my kids participated with that.

Re: PreK Moms and Homework Question
When DS was in PK he had to bring in 5 items that all started with a certain letter on Wednesday and some kind of show and tell on Friday (something with legs or wheels or green, free choice etc)
He is in K and has his first assignment (all about me) due next week.
