Re: Preliminary Injunction against MTA strike
Yup- the city has gotten preliminary injunctions to avert strikes in 1999 and 2002 also.

Re: Preliminary Injunction against MTA strike
That's not surprising b/c it's illegal for public employees to strike. I wonder if the MTA would actually try to enforce it to the point of sending employees to jail for violating the injuction. As much as I think employees deserve a fair wage/benefits and realize the obstacles a public sector union faces in trying to get their demands, I hope the parties reach an agreement and the strike doesn't occur.

It doesn't mean that they won't ignore it. The union leader tore it up at a rally yesterday....

absolutely... they can ignore it... but I don't think they would- at least they never have in the past. But who knows. I just hope they come to a resolution by tomorrow.

They said they would charge the union $1 million per day and each worker $20,000 per day for each day of the strike. I also heard for every day of the strike the workers will lose 2-days of pay.

Re: Preliminary Injunction against MTA strike
The union probably won't ignore the injunction b/c there are too many consequences to violating the injunction. The union could be fined millions of dollars and individual workers could be fined up to 2 days' pay. Those who strike could be jailed as well.

Yes 1 million and everyday after it doubles and I think it was 25,000 per worker (not a lot of difference )

Re: Preliminary Injunction against MTA strike
Maybe I'm a pessimist but I don't see this as being the only tactic working to avert the strike completely. Enforcement of the $20K/worker is virtually impossible to do since they could argue that the subways were closed off so they actually couldn't go to work. And, the $1mil for the union and the loss of 2days pay/1day out are both pretty standard measures. I'm sure these union guys were well aware of the threats they faced when they actually voted for the strike.
I really hope they get what they deserve. The MTA is run by a bunch of a$$holes.

Re: Preliminary Injunction against MTA strike
is it me or does this go on every year? how long are their contracts? I feel like I'm either being forced to pay more to commute and have my trains not come ontime or be subject to the trains not coming at all.. how is this a good system?

The last time was 2002.
Knowing these contracts are usually an issue, they really should have them end during the summer, when schools are not in session, tourism is not as great, more people are on vacation and it's not such a b!tch to deal with the walking, etc that would be necessary to deal with the strike.
