Prepare for "Irene" Lets have one thread- What to expect...

Lets take a page from Waterspout, and since there are a gajillion threads, maybe we should just have one.

1. We ARE going to get hit. It might be a Cat 1 or 2, or it might be a tropical storm. We ARE going to get hit.

2. It is going to start in the NY area (LI/NY) at around 11pm or so Sat night.

3. These storms are huge and take MULTI hours to clear. Yes, it will start on Sat night. Will it be bad? Maybe, maybe not. No one can know till it actually hits.

4. The WAY that it hits land before NY can change how the storm will hit us. IF it hits land before us, the storm will weaken. By how much?? Dunno. But it will have an impact.

5. NO one. NO ONE can tell YOU if you should travel, cancel plans, if your flight will still go. Keep in mind the plane you fly out on has to come FROM somewhere. The airlines are not too keen on flying their planes in, maybe having a delay, then having their planes exposed to a hurricane.

6. Be careful. Hopefully, on Sunday we will all yell at the weather forcast and said they cried "wolf". Frankly, every forcast shows we are getting SMACKED. Would you rather be prepred just in case? Or do you want to go to the store on Saturday and not get any batteries, or candles, or flashlights? Bateries keep.

7. You should gas up the car. You should fill your propane tanks. Prepare for loosing power for a few days. The WORST thing that happens is nothing happens.

8. I want to re-touch on something. I will NOT be traveling on Sunday. I had plans and have cancelled them. I will not take ANY chance with road flooding or my life if we are getting smacked with a hurricane. On Sunday I can make a decision if I should do what I wanted afterall, but I am erring on the side of caution. NO ONE can tell you if YOU should travel or not. Thats up to you.

9. keep in mind that if there is significant rain, treese and roots get weak.

10. NEVER EVER EVER EVER touch a downed power line. EVER EVER EVER.

11. Fill the tub with water. This will assist you if you need to flush (if you will loose power during the storm.)

12. Go shopping if you want to, but dont do it on Saturday.

13. If you have an icemaker make some ice for the next few days. Keep it in the freezer. Take it out as needed if you loose power. If you go to BUY ice, there wont be any to purchase.

14. Go buy one of those old phones that attaches to the wall that is NOT battery opperated. You are going to loose your phone if you loose power. This way you wont.

15. Charge it up!!!! Charge up all your Ipads, Iphones, cell ohone, MP3, portable DVD players etc. Be prepared. If needed we will be charging our cell phones in the car and using one at a time. One always chaging, one always using. We teather our IPAD's to the phone to get internet.

16. Go outside your house and latch down all your outside stuff. Put the grill away. Put furniture under the deck. Cover the pool if you can. You dont want your furniture to fly into the house.

Thats all I can think of that I have seen on other threads.

Great list! But tell me why we can't flush? Probably a dumb question. Does plumbing run off electric?

No, you might not have water. If your water is pumped with electricity...NO water.

Here are some freezer tips:

If you have to leave and you're worried about food in the freezer, do this before you evacuate:
1. Put all food in black garbage bags.
2. Freeze a small cup of water then place a coin on the top of the ice.
3. Place this in your freezer.
4. When you get home, see if the coin is still on top or has fallen to the bottom. If it's fallen to the bottom, throw away everything in the garbage bags.
Sounds simplistic but electricity can go out for several hours defrosting food and then come back on leading people to think the food is ok when it isn't.

Full freezers stay colder longer so make extra ice or fill some water bottles to put in there.

Do we need to board up windows?

I'm going to put water bottles in every spare inch of my freezer. For one thing, I'll have lots of frozen water., and for another thing, freezers stay best when full
