Prescription Meds for Heartburn

Anyone on anything?

I know with DD they offered me SOMETHING but I hate taking anything when pregnant.

I plan on asking for something at my appt on Tuesday because this is out of control. I cant take another 8+ weeks of it!

What do you take and is there any side effects?

THANKS! Chat Icon

Re: Prescription Meds for Heartburn

Not, prescription, but my Doc recommended Zantac. It's been a lifesaver. I get the lowest dosage one - I think it's Zantac75.

I took Zantac with both my pregnancies. I took two of the OTC 75mg tablets.

Re: Prescription Meds for Heartburn

I was told Zantac not Pepcid. I take the 150 though- the 75 doesn't cut it for me. I had heartburn issues before pregnancy and lived on Pepcids then...

Also, Tums Smoothies work a lot better for me then reg Tums, which did nothing but make me barf.

I remember Googling it when I first started dying of heartburn and I think both were the same preg class (B) but Ranitidine (Zantac) was preferred over Famotidine (Pepcid)... Maybe b/c they use Zantac in babies w/ reflux so they have more info? I'm not sure... You're not the first person I've heard of that was told to take Pepcid but definitely most women are told Zantac before or over Pepcid. Also, I think there might be different things going on with the other ingredients in diff types of Pepcid b/c I know there are a few kinds.

Thanks everyone! I will probably try the Zantac but I'm still going to clear it with my dr. first.

Re: Prescription Meds for Heartburn

i held out until the very end (38+ weeks... but then DD was 9 days late!) but finally couldn't take it anymore. TUMS was a complete joke at that point, i was sleeping basically sitting up, and my throat/chest/etc burned so much.. all the way up to my ears... to the point that i felt like hair was growing out of my ears from the tingling/burning Chat Icon Chat Icon From the first day i took pepcid, it went away completely and i felt like i got my life back (i couldnt sleep at all at that point b/c of the HB). Pepcid really was a lifesaver- next time around, i won't wait so long!
