prevacid- coincidence? making it worse?

So we recently switched from zantac to prevacid the past 3 days.

We usually give the 1ml dose in the late afternoon, early evening.

The past 3 nights have been horrific. Crying screaming on and off (mostly on) for 2 plus hours.

Seems to have horribly bad gas.

Is this a coincidence? Is the prevacid giving him horrible gas or having this awful reaction for him???

i'm going out of my mind here with these guessing games and this gas/formula/reflux b*llshit! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Was the Zantac not working? I think Zantac is stronger then Prevacid. When we switched DS from Zantac to Axid, he got worse... We had to play with the dose before we found something that worked...

Zantac is def not stronger than Prevacid, but maybe it's not agreeing with your little guy for some reasonChat Icon

Prevacid often take s a few days to start working. However Zantac and Prevacid are two different types of drug. One neutralizes the acid being produced and the other slows the production of the acid...I don't remember which is which. That being said many children, likemy own daughter are own both.

Chat Icon no experience with prevacid..my DD was on axid but she had silent reflux. i also just wanted to add that if your DS has bad gas have you considered giving him probiotics? ask your ped. about it or do a search on here too...i immediately used them with my son b/c i was so traumatized by my DD's NB stage of gas/reflux colic. i believe it helped him to be a MUCH less fussy baby. good luck and hang in there. nothing more difficult that when they are in pain and you can't figure it out Chat Icon

I've actually been giving him probiotics for almost a week now. Chat Icon I'm willing to do anything at this point! Chat Icon

Did your ped. or GI tell you to stop Zantac when you started the Prevacid? It usually takes up to two weeks for the Prevacid to really kick in so most GI's will tell you to continue using Zantac, which is a H2 blocker, while you transitin to Prevacid, which is a PPI. Call your GI and find out, if they did not specify because you also have to space them 4 hours apart. Additionally, some children need both a H2 blocker and a PPI to effectively treat reflux. One is not necessarily stronger than the other, it is just that they work differently.

One last question, are you giving your DS a Compound (liquid) Prevacid or Solutabs?

Haven't seen the GI yet. We have an appointment but not for 2 more weeks. The ped didn't tell me to keep using the zantac (it didn't seem like it was working) while doing the prevacid. The prevacid is a liquid.

So i think you ladies were right. I think he still needed the zantac. I gave it to him this morning and he seems to be doing much better, sleeping longer and less aggitated. We'll see how tonight goes. Chat Icon

I should keep up the prevacid right?

Re: prevacid- coincidence? making it worse?

Ok so this morning, i gave the prevacid and then 30 minutes later the sh*t hit the fan with him screaming, not going to sleep, throwing himself back, etc.

I don't get it. Why does it seem like right after i give the prevacid... is when he has these horribly bad screaming fits for 2 hours?!?!?!?

I would go back to the Zantac or call the GI and get an emergency appointment..
