Probably a stupid question re 2 under 2...
but how do you manage stairs when you're alone? If you have a NB and a 19-month old that can't do a full flight on his own, what do you do?
These are the things I'm stressing over

Re: Probably a stupid question re 2 under 2...
I am actually thinking about this too when i have #2 as i have to go up three (short) flights of steps to get to my condo. I am thinking for my situation put the baby in a carrier and hold the toddlers hand? My son will be better at the outside steps by the time i have another baby, but our steps are steep and still a little tricky. In the house, i am not sure, take them up one at a time? We live in a one level so i dont have to worry about that. and DS is OK with inside stairs at my SIL-but he's also almost 2. it will work out and you will figure out what works for you guys

Re: Probably a stupid question re 2 under 2...
can he climb the stairs on his knees? if he can, then you can just follow right behind him with the baby...
if not, you have to find someplace to secure him and the baby...put the baby in the swing, bring your oldest upstairs, put him in crib, go back down and get baby...
My son could climb the stairs, so I would just follow behind him, but there were times when he wanted to be carried. There were also sometimes that I carried both of them at the same time...not smart, I know.

I have a 13 month old and a 2 week old. What I have been doing is putting DD in her bouncer at the bottom of the stairs, carrying DS up, putting him in the playroom which has a safety gate at the door. Run downstairs and get DD out of the bouncer. Pain in the a**, but I am super paranoid and there is no way I would carry them both up together.

Re: Probably a stupid question re 2 under 2...
DD walked up stairs at 19 months when DS was born but on occasuion she wouldnt want to. i dont know your house set up but I have a bunch of stairs ourtside and then a door and then another flightinside. iw oudl try to get her to go up theoutside stairs alone whand then promise her i would carry her inside. I woudl clse the door leave her on the steps inside, run upstairs put teh carrier down and then go back and get her. With my set up I could do this, not sure what kind of house you have.

If this makes you feel any better DD is 19 months and she can pretty much go up and down herself as long as someone is watching her.
As soon as he shows interest in them (if he hasn't already) I would start teaching him how to go down on his butt.

I am STRESSING this so much. We are *almost * living upstairs (bedrooms) but for 2 years we've ben on the main floor which was worry free. Can you imagine me with a 2 yr, 1 yr and newborn? I'm a wreck. I told my Dh we must be done very soon so the kids (2 and 1 yr old) can adjust to upstairs a couple of months before the baby gets here.
I'll let you know how it goes. GL!

My house was orignally a ranch. I have always loved colonials. Now that we will soon have our bedrooms upstairs, I have never appreciated a ranch so much. It's really so convenient!!!!!!! I'm sure gonna miss it!

That's why I consider one too - but it would probably mean a playroom in a basement anyway - so same problem!

Ryan loves to crawl the stairs - we let him "practice" going up like 4 or 5 tops - but I'd be nervous with 12 steep stairs and me with a NB in my hands - if he slips - so we all end up down the stairs ??

awww... well we are lucky, the house we want to buy has a living room and a den. the basement is way too small for a play area

Ideally, I want a house with a first floor playroom since I know the den will become DH's "media" room, and I like to leave the living room kid free - right now we have a media/playroom - Ryan loves the flat screen

Re: Probably a stupid question re 2 under 2...
We pretty much lived on the first floor for the first 3 months during the day. We had everything downstairs, so I never really needed to go up with both of them. If I needed to go upstairs, I would carry the baby and follow behind DS as he crawled up. Going down, I'd bring the older one down first and strap him in the highchair, then go up and get the baby.

Re: Probably a stupid question re 2 under 2...
I do everyday b/c we live upstairs. There are times I carry my infant dd in her infant seat, and my older dd in my other arm. Or my older dd crawls up the stairs and I stand right behind her so in case she slips im there. Or I carry both up each in a different arm. Last of all I leave my infant dd down at bottom of stairs in infant car seat and run dd up stairs and then fly back down and grab my other dd. All depends on whats going on.

Re: Probably a stupid question re 2 under 2...
I would carry one at a time or hold the older one's(22 months) hand, while holding the infant.
There were things I trained my older child the minute I knew I was pregnant: -he was off the bottle -he had to stand next to me while I got things out of the car (some kids take off) -he was holding my hands in parking lots -he was going down the stairs
