Probably stupid question... but how can Amazon be so much cheaper?
I'm thinking of ordering the Flip camera for someone.
On the Flip website... the camera + HDMI cables + power adapter (with coupon code) are $254.98 with free shipping.
The same on amazon is $224.65.
How is that possible?
And actually the price went UP on amazon. On the 14th, the total amazon price was about $20 cheaper than it is now.

check the shipping charge on amazon. sometimes they are legitimately cheaper but sometimes i find a high shipping charge makes up the difference.

You need to keep in mind, they can offer it cheaper because of the traffic they generate and how much volume they push of products.
25 dollars is not that much more off. You are only looking at 10% off...
Amazon is legit and you shouldn't have to worry about the price. Amazon does price stuff down time to time.
Make sure the model numbers are the same

I look at it like Costco. They buy items in bulk so they can offer it cheaper. An item like the Flip is popular so it makes sense that it would be something they have a ton of.

I think it comes down to volume. Amazon moves a ton of merchandise and the suppliers know it.

Part of it is volume and the other margin. They are typically doing a large amount of business and for this reason, companies give them discount pricing on items that they then pass on to their customers. They also may be willing to take a lower margin for a product because they are making more on another. Other times the volume they sell of a product at a specific price point is so high, it makes sense to give away some margin for increased sales of the item.

Amazon carries my company's products and that is exactly how it works with our merchandise.
We give them a bulk discount, in line with the discount we give any wholesaler/distributor, but we have seen some of our products on sale for a greater discount than we give them (or anybody, really), but it is only temporary (it's usually our pre-order stuff) & it is only select products, so I assume it balances out for them. We give them the same discount on all products, yet they will discount some products only slightly, or not at all.

Amazon also doesn't have the expense of having hundreds of stores each with a hundred workers like Best Buy does.
Instead they have a few warehouses to maintain.
I think Amazon.com is one of the 3 best websites on the web.

Re: Probably stupid question... but how can Amazon be so much cheaper?
I agree...its only a 10% discount. That isn't that much at all.
If it were a 50% price difference, I might question it. But you can probably find this item on 20 different sites/stores for 20 different prices. Same as any item, that is totally normal.
