problem with lanscaper - opinions please-long

When we moved into our house we had to rip out the entire front yard - we hired a landscaper, added a sprinkler system, and spent a LOT of money doing it.

They did a beautiful job...BUT I always seem to be nagging the landscaper (who we still pay to upkeep everything) to take care of things.

My current problem is that we have 2 dead bushes and the sprinkler system isn't working properly. One of the bushes isn't the biggest deal - but the other one is a very expensive tree. The irony is his guys trimmed it like it was alive!! Chat Icon The sprinkler system isn't getting all the plants - at the start of the season we paid about $150 just to have them turn on the system and test that it works properly.

I called the lanscaper 3 times before he called me back - he told me he would "look into the situation" - That was 2 weeks ago. Nothing has been done.

Here is where I need your opinion - I have a bill from him...I don't want to pay it until he takes care of what he needs to take care of - my husband on the other hand says - just pay it and we'll find someone else for next season. Don't get me wrong - I still want to find someone new - BUT I think it's only fair that he takes care of my problems before he gets paid - what would you do in this situation?

I wouldn't pay it right now. If the sprinkler system is faulty, and he's the one who put it in, he should be fixing it! Since he hasn't done that as of yet, I'd hold off on paying the bill.

I would send a copy back with a note that you aren't paying until the sprinker system is repaired and the 2 dead plants are replaced. That should light a fire under him. My landscaper guarantees everything he puts in. Last year he put in a row of arborvities and this year 2 of them died and he replaced them no questions asked. We didn't even have to mention it, his guys must've told him it was looking bad and he came by, looked at them and told us he was replacing them.

Trust me I work in construction, it is done to us, and we do it to our subs.... withhold at least part of it until everything is done to your satisfaction. When are they due back for the next maintenance? Fall clean up? or the spring?

I agree and only send partial payment with a "to do" list. $150 to turn on the sprinklers - you must have many zones. Whatever the case, ensure you get your sprinklers blown out at the end of the year.

I wouldn't send anything, not even half. This will definitely make him move quicker, IMOChat Icon

I would send a partial payment, and tell him when he fixes it he will get the rest of it.
You have to pay him for some of the job he did. Im sorry, but he has to make a living and pay bills to. My DH is a landscaper, but he will fix the problem the NEXT day.
He gets customers who wont pay for months because they are behind in bilss.
Just call him and tell him to fix it, and ask if he can move the sprinkler head so it hits the tree.
