Processing delay in 5yr old?
Recently, my son's teacher called to let me know of his school status so far. At our last parent teacher meeting, she expressed how smart he was and at a high level of reading but often needs redirection and cues to get started on tasks. She told me not to worry. Five months later, she called to say she believes he has a processing disorder because when he reads, he often guesses with words, not understanding what he is reading. I do notice this at home from time to time. She advised me to write a letter to his first grade teacher to ask for him to get evaluated in the Fall. I rather do this sooner, maybe over the summer. Where can I take him for this kind of evaluation? He has no speech problems or social issues so I am clueless on who would evaluate for this type of thing. Also, how do schools approach processing delays? TIA!

5 seems like a young age to be able to fully comprehend what they are reading. A neurologist is who you would see.

I see that LIJ has a speech/hearing center that evaluates for processing disorders but I'm not sure if they are neurologists  My stupid ped office is of course no help so I'm left trying to figure out where to start.

I would call them and ask. It doesn't have to be a neuro, but since processing is a brain function, it's not a bad idea.

His teacher said the school will evaluate him the beginning of first grade in the fall but until then, I should work really hard with him in reviewing his K work this summer and to get an outside eval from a dr bc she really believes its a processing issue and she has never seen a kid like him that learns everything well and is at top level but gets lost in big groups and tends to daze out. That gets me worried when she says she has never seen a kid like my kid. lol but she is a great teacher so idk. I am going to call LIJ and see what they think! Thank you ladies!

There are neuro-psychologists who are experts at discerning all manner of disorders. There aren't many of them, they are EXTREMELY pricey and they are rarely covered by insurance.
As a 2nd choice you can look up clinical psychologists who have expertise in neuropsychology.

My kid's 1st grade teacher said the same think to us. We took him to a neurologist and then the development peds at LIJ and they both said he has Adhd - inattentive type.
In order to have him tested for an Auditory Processing Disorder they need to be 7.
We started him on meds and have seen amazing results. He was doing well in math and reading but independent work and responding to answers were hard for him. After putting him on meds, the teacher was amazed with his progress and how well he was doing with them.
I was reluctant to start meds but figured I would give it a shot, and I was surprised there was such a big difference. We confimred the first dr's disgnosis with the Developmental/Behavorial Department at LIJ who said they same thing.
Good Luck - I would try to get it figured out over the summer since 1/2 of the year was wasted with lets see how they progress, which took until january before they said maybe something is up.

You see, I never really noticed a problem with DS except for the fact that he tends to take a while doing stuff but I just attributed that to me being a 'rusher' and I'm always moving fast getting things done. The only time this issue came up was when his teacher said he is spacing out at times and needs constant reminding to get work done. I never realized there was an issue until she mentioned it bc he was always smart, enthusiastic, energetic, polite. I always attributed his 'taking time doing things' to the fact that he never went to day care or nursery school plus he was born at the end of the year. I just wish they evaluated him when they first noticed the issue, not waiting until 1st grade.

The schools tend to wait til the kids fall off the curve. In the grand scheme of things there are kids that are way worse off, and who are falling behind and need more immedaite help, so those kids get evaluated first. You have to request it, which is annoying but unfortunatly the way it is.
My son's teacher requested a meeting with the CSE regarding my son and because he was doing good in reading and math and not good in writing and or speech they wanted to wait and see, and had her use a timer to see if he would get his stuff done in a timely manner. We had 3/4 of the year as a wait and see and he didn't improve at all. IMO, a waste, but since he was not failing, they need to help the ones that are.
It is a good thing the school won't provide extra stuff for every single little thing because I could not imagine my taxes if they did, bu ti stinks when it is your children who need a little bit extra.

Has she shown you any of this evidence? Has he been presented to the school based support team? Just telling you to go and get him evaluated isn't enough. There has to be evidence of RTI (response to intervention) through the school or the CSE isn't going to act immediately. The school needs to have data proving that they have demonstrated a multi-tiered approach to addressing his weaknesses. You don't want to go through paying for an evaluation only to be told the school-based services have not yet been exhausted. I would ask for a conference with the teacher and ask her to show you data. Good luck!

I agree with Teachergal. I'd start by asking for a meeting with the teacher, and possibly the school psychologist. Why does she think there is a processing issue vs. ADHD inattentive type? What interventions have been tried? What has worked? What has not? Ask to see data.
NYS education regulations mandate that interventions must be tried and shown ineffective prior to a referral to the Committee on Special Education. You have the right, as a parent to request referral to the CSE, but unless DS is found to have a disability and that disability significantly impedes his academic progress he may not qualify for any special education services.

I totally agree and she said the school will not eval until sept when he starts first grade. So I am stuck all summer worrying now :/ She said she refused to get him evaluated during the year bc he was one of the top kids academically so she just figured it was just an adjustment issue. I don't know, there's only 2 weeks left of school so I am left confused if I should just wait. I was thinking ab seeing a developmental/behavioral pediatrician to get an eval on my own and see.

you can go through your school district now for an evaluation i wouldnt wait until the fall however...you may end up waiting until the fall for any services, most districts cut back on services during the summer months. my son gets OT and he does not receive services during the summer but will when he starts kindergarten in september. every district is different.
I would look into it now...it takes a while to fill out the paperwork and to get a call back for the evaulation. When you call your district for an evaluation just tell them his teacher recommends it. The evaluation is free...call your childs school main office and ask them to give you the person and phone number to contact. good luck!
