progesterone delaying ovulation

My doctor prescribed progesterone suppositories as my levels were very low. The following month I had no lh surge and the cycle was only 23 days vs normal 27 days and lh surge every month about day 11/12. This month it seems to be back to normal again but the lh surge line was only dark for one day - usually 2 days show up. Does this mean that the progesterone stopped me ovulating for the next month so that I can only expect to ovulate every other month when using it?

Re: progesterone delaying ovulation

No progesterone suppositories will not prevent you from ovulating the following month, but what they can do, is delay your AF. By delaying your AF, ...your lead follicule could start maturing prior to even getting your AF. I have had very 'early" ovulation after using the suppositories when my AF was significantly delayed.

How many mg of progesterone were you taking ?

Are you temping ? You will be able to tell what's going on by the chart.

The cycle that was 23 days, was AF delayed ...in other words...the cycle before that, did it take awhile for AF to show ?

Thanks for a reply so quickly. I have never been in a chat room before so please bear with me.
Progesterone was 200mg twice daily.
I stopped taking my temperature months ago as it was not showing any significant change after the lh surge on the test strips. From what I can tell progesterone causes your temp to increase, so as my progesterone is low, that is one reason why my temp doesn't show an increase. I had no fertility problems in the past - have 18, 16 and 13 year old children - and my temp changes then were very reliable and predictable. Yes I know age is a problem but my doctor says I am just lacking progesterone.
The month I took progesterone it did not cause af to be delayed at all - usual 27 days - just the following month was very short.

Re: progesterone delaying ovulation

What cycle day was your progesterone tested ? Do you remember the level ? If it's too low, that could be a sign that ovulation isn't taking place. You may need to jump start it with clomid which will also help your progesterone level.

My progesterone has been quite low as well....but there should still be a significant thermal shift, if you are ovulating.

I would recommend temping and charting again....

Progesterone was tested on day 22. I don't know the level but it was pretty much non-existent. The doctor says I have good sized follicles so should be ovulating.
Regarding this month. I don't know whether to try the progesterone again or leave it till next month when it will have been out of my system for a long time so should be back ovulating as normal. I don't really want to risk delaying ovulating next month again if this month was not normal and putting everything back another 2 or 3 months. I wondered if anyone else had experienced this.
My doctor wants me to use the progesterone- I don't want to risk the couple of months delay.
I guess I will go back to temping again - it won't do any harm.

Re: progesterone delaying ovulation

If the progesterone was non existent, on cd 22, then that means ovulation hadn't occurred yet. If he saw the follicules on cd 22, then they didn't rupture at that point and ovulation didn't occur. If you started the progesterone at that point, it definitely could have interferred with ovulation.

Progesterone needs to be tested at 7 days past ovulation. Not many people ovulate on cd 14/15...(hence the cd 22 progesterone test).

I definitely think you should use the suppositories ,...once you confirm ovulation. This can be done with a blood test, (P4) or with temping. You should not start the suppositories until about 4 days past ovulation.

Here is some helpful information....

Progesterone (P4) 7 dpo > 15 ng/ml

A progesterone test is done to confirm ovulation. When a follicle releases its egg, it becomes what is called a corpus luteum and produces progesterone. A level over 5 probably indicates some form of ovulation, but most doctors want to see a level over 10 on a natural cycle, and a level over 15 on a medicated cycle. There is no mid-luteal level that predicts pregnancy. Some say the test may be more accurate if done first thing in the morning after fasting.
