Re: Progress with Speech?
The evaluator actually got him talking.
His vocab doubled from evaluation to first session.
We have only had 3 sessions, but I see a huge improvement. She said the thing he lacked the most was the self confidence to speak. That he had the words, he just wants to be left alone about using them.
He rarely talks in session, but once she leaves he is a chatterbox.
ETA: he's also 2 though

Re: Progress with Speech?
Ryan started with speech at home one year ago this month. In September of last year, he started going to preschool and receiving speech there. I noticed very small progress... 1 or 2 approximations...
I would say that his speech has exploded since January when he turned 3. He says some actual words now and soooo many approximations. He tries to say sentences also. I feel like everyday he says something new, and will try to repeat words that we say to him now (which he NEVER did before).

Re: Progress with Speech?
I have really mixed feelings about speech therapy in children under 2. While I was happy the services were there, I would get very frustrated because Johnny just wasn't saying much other than babble at 18 months...they did teach him a few signs that helped...and he was starting to approximate after some time (ma for "more" baba for "bubbles" etc..).
But I really really feel that speech is something that eventually "clicks" in their brain. Literally one day he said "up". (around 19/20 months). He had been saying mama and dada before that, and "mmm good!" lol...but the day he said "up" it was followed by "more" and "milk" etc...
Then it just slooowly took off from there. We had a few new words every week and now at 2 and a half, we have phrases and SOME (not many) small sentences. An example would be "I pooped mommy" or "No more turkey, all done". It is rare to get sentences but good lord he has come such a long long way, I NEVER thought I'd hear the speech like this!
For some kids it takes time but they will all eventually speak...but boy do I know the frustration of waiting for those words!!

Re: Progress with Speech?
It depends on the child really. For my son it took a while. He really started saying single words at 23 months... Now he is 27 months and he is just starting to put 2 words together. Occasionally I will get a whole sentence.
He has been in therapy for 11 months.
I have to say they learn so much though, even if they are not saying anything yet. Once he starts talking you will be amazed by how much he actually knows.

Re: Progress with Speech?
my son started ST at 9 months. basically made no progress for almost a year. went to a special ed preschool 5 days week starting at 2 years 9 months. at that time, he said about 12 words spontaenously, and maybe 30 total if you pushed him like crazy. (we spent 8 months working on the sign language symbol for more... he has never used it) anyway,8 months after starting preschool, he was speaking in full sentences...the only problem, the order of hte words was mixed up. but the quantity of words and variety was huge. 2 more years of special ed preschool ,and he was fully mainstreamed in K.
oh, and he really started to speak right after he turned 3, but started to read at 3.5. go figure....

Re: Progress with Speech?
My ds had about 6 months of EI and has been in a specialized school since September. He is 3 1/2. For us the signing came very quickly and he used that for the majority of his communication for awhile. He is just starting to say certain words, but they still sound a lot like approximations..although you can understand what he is saying. Receptively he has increased faster than expressively, but we do see a tremendous difference since last year.
For us, the therapists think he may have apraxia, which would explain why a lot of what he tries to say sound approximate.
I think every child is different in how fast they progress, but I do think speech works.
