propane tank for BBQ
Ok, so we finally bought a BBQ and tank. I brought the tank to a garden center near work to have filled and he said they don't fill new ones; they only do trade-ins. He mentioned something about federal guidelines, but I don't want to give in my brand new tank for someone else's old one.
any suggestions for a place to get an initial fill-up and the approx cost?
TIA!!
Oops...I'm in Levittown!

Re: propane tank for BBQ
There's a place on Orinoco Drive in Brightwaters that fills them. It's connected to the beer and soda distributor.
ETA: Not sure of the cost, usually DH just runs in.

Re: propane tank for BBQ
There is a garden center in N. Bellmore by the train station. It's $25 to fill YOUR tank! If you are headed South on Bellmore Ave you make a right two blocks before Sunrise Hwy and you will see the sign. HTH!

In Bethpage, off of Route 107 on Central Avenue there is a beer distributor who fills your tank and doesn't do the trade in thing.

he said they don't fill new ones; they only do trade-ins. He mentioned something about federal !
A guy at Sears (in White Plains) told me that can't fill tanks there (they don't do trade-ins either), b/c they don't have an outside area ( it's part of a mall), but most nurseries should be able to, if they want to. I don't know if they need a permit for that or something. The one where I get my plants doesn't do it, but we just tried a few until we found one that did.

Re: propane tank for BBQ
I bought a new tank but I ended up just doing the tradeins. It's just easier and yes while it's nice to have a "new" tank, they all pretty much do the same job new or used.
As long as the tank works, I couldn't care less if its a new tank or not. We are only talking like $25 bucks so it's not a whole lot of cash.
I exchange my tanks at Road Ready gas station at the intersection of North Jerusalem Road and Bellmore Road.

It's more about faulty tanks as opposed to a new tank. If you buy a new tank you know there is nothing wrong with it. We have a new tank and one that we exchange...I have gotten faulty exchanges twice and it's a real pain in the azz when you have to run it back. Now, we always have two full tanks on hand just in case the exchange tank is faulty.
