Prune Juice for Infants??

DS has been really constipated and his pediatrician said to use a suppository for him. My family has been telling me that we all suffer from constipation from baby formula and some of my relatives have used a drop of prunce juice in sterlized water to make the baby go to the bathroom. Has anyone else done this? Is it safe for a baby to drink prune juice at only 3 weeks?

I would not be offering prune juice at 3 weeks of age. Constipation isn't uncommon for infants.

He cries and turns beat red and pushes and he hasn't had a bm in two days. The doctor said if he went past today to give him a suppository. I bought them, but I am afraid to do it! His hiney is so little! Chat Icon

I have done supposatories and it is not that bad. Have your mom do it the first time if you're nervous Chat Icon

Re: Prune Juice for Infants??

When DD was constipated, I was out of town and didn't have a thermometer. The ped told me I could use a Q-tip. Just insert the "cottony" part, spin it a bit and then remove it. The "prize" came right out after the Q-tip.

Re: Prune Juice for Infants??

Little babies always turn red when they push a BM and some always cry, they are just getting used to their digestive system and bowels.

Is the BM hard or formed? IF not I wouldn't give DC anything, if it's not hard or formed, DC's not constipated I was told.

If it is, If he isn't crying, uncomfy throughout the day when he isn't going, 2 days in between BM's isn't bad.

My doc wouldn't let DD go without a BM at that age more than 5 days, and when she went, it was in no way formed or hard. Some babies just don't go everyday.

I did 1 oz of pear juice to 1 oz water, or mixed 1 oz of pear juice in her bottles if she was approaching the 4-5 day mark.

My Dr advised no juices for quite awhile. We used water to move things along.

Our pediatrician started my son on prune juice at six months as he was severely constipated from his formula - he didn't have a BM for a month. He gets an ounce or so in his bottle 3 times a day, it's really been working well, but I wouldn't do it that young without speaking to my doctor.

The suppositories are not bad. Did you get the Fleet liquid ones for babies? So much easier than trying to keep a solid one up there. Fleet Babylax

Re: Prune Juice for Infants??

I think the prune juice should be fine. The dr told us to give it to DD (1/2 water , 1/2 prune juice) when she was constipated - - she was only about 6 or 7 weeks old. We still use it now, she is 10 mths...works like a charm!

Re: Prune Juice for Infants??

I used to have to use suppositories for my DD. My doctor recommended cutting the suppository in half lengthwise. Usually that's all it takes to get things moving. It also looks much easier to insert as you look at the little hiney
