PSA: 24-hour hardware store in NYC

Friday night, DH and I arrived home to a flood in our basement. It must have started not too long before we got home, because it wasn't that bad in the grand scheme of things. The water was about an inch away from getting my drums and his favorite guitar...thank god it happened when it did because otherwise, our instruments would have been damaged.

Anyway, it happened from a frozen pipe and DH ran out to Home Depot to get supplies while I stayed home and cleaned up. We dropped the thermostat so the boiler wouldn't need water.

He ended up getting the wrong size pipe cutter and by the time we realized it, Home Depot was closed. It was midnight. It felt like -15* outside and our boiler needed the water or else we would not be able to heat the house through the night.

I had always heard about there being a 24-hour hardware store in Manhattan...googled it...called them - they had exactly what we needed. Drove in from our place in South Queens...round trip took about an hour. Pipe was fixed in about twenty minutes. Water was back up and running, as was the boiler.

What a night! But anyway, the point of the story is, if you have a middle-of-the-night emergency that you can fix on your own and don't need to call in the pros, there is an option out there for supplies if you are not too far away from Manhattan.
