PSA: ALWAYS double check with your doctor the dosage for meds
As you may know DS has been sick for over a week. Well at yesterday's visit, on top pf the RSV and the gastro bug, he now has a double ear infection, so the doctor prescribed an anti-biotic. I had her show me exactly how much to give him in a syringe, and then had the prescription filled.
I just got it back and the stupid pharmacist *misread* the script and made it out for THREE TIMES the recommended dosage! My son is barely 18 lbs, and when I called to verify the dosage with my Ped she said the overdose for the 10 days recommended could have had a dangerous effect on him.
Please please please make sure you are pro-active with your Peds & pharmacies.

EXCELLENT REMINDER!
When I was breastfeeding, I was given the wrong RX for a sinus infection. It was someone else's name!
Did you call the pharmacy!?

Did you call the pharmacy!? Oh yeah. They actually had the brass ones to blame it on the doctor's handwriting. Considering the dosage is for a 50 lb kid, you'd think they would have caught the mistake being they verified his age

Wow, that's scary. Thank god you checked!
ETA: I've always thought it would be better if rx's were typed so that there is no chance of misreading a doctor's handwriting.

Wow. What made you check with your ped after you got it? I would have never thought to do that.

Glad you checked! This happened to me when I was pregnant and the pharmacist also blamed it on the docs handwriting...

Good you checked
i used to work at retail pharm chain years ago here in ct and i can't tell you how many times i saw techs filling prescriptions and the pharmacist just checking it off-going through the motions and i was a manager of the front store, not even in the pharmacy section.
Everyone should always double check everything!
thank goodness nothing happened to DS

Re: PSA: ALWAYS double check with your doctor the dosage for meds
I was just at the pedi with my son this morning and the receptionist and the doc were on the phone with a parent explaining that it was 1/2 teaspoon and not 1-1/2 teaspoon of meds. I wonder of that was you? Is your pedi in Mineola?

my one doctor has a machine that they type on their blackberry or somethign like that, and it prints the script out...very cool.

Oh, my ped has this too...he actually sent the Rx to my pharmacy (he asked what town I live in, what pharmacy I use, looked it up on his blackberry) electronically and it was waiting for me when I got there...no drop off & wait.
Ah, technology. Hopefully it will prevent scary things like this in the future.

I agree totally. Recently had the same thing happen to DS. The hospital told us the oral steroid once a day and even had it written on a separate sheet for us. What did Walgreens do? Write twice a day on the prescription when I filled it!
