Wow I didn't know that. It makes sense but I never would have thought of that as long as the company is still in business. It makes me think twice about some of the cards that I've been holding on to.

I think that is total crap. I paid out the money for a gift card. Forget if I am the lowest on the pecking order. Bigger creditors can take the hit better than Joe Consumer.

Sort of happened to me...
Received a gift certificate for Christmas for a collectible store that went under. Gift certificate is worth nothing now, can't even get the cash value for it. What a bummer

it is not really the company's fault not honoring the gift cars -during bankruptcy proceedings most companies have a person monitoring the debts - and they are who implement no gift cards because they are unsecured debt
Massachusetts- has rules that gift cards can't loose value if baught in the state - but i know fortuneoff gift cards loose value if you don't use them - that is why i used one last year for a christmas present to make sure to all my value out of it

I tend to use gift cards within like 1 month of receiving them, but we have one home depot one we've been hanging on to for the spring when we do some household repairs.
This economy, its so scary!!

I have Kohl's GCs and a little $ left on a Pier 1 GC..
Hmmmm gonna do some shopping SOON! I love giving GCs as gifts, but, from now on, I'll give cash or a check.

There is actually a Harrows on Route 110. They opened a small store on the sidestreet off of 110 that goes to the new Lowes.
We saw it just a week or two ago and were  We were guessing they wanted to get the creditors off of their back - so they claimed bankruptcy to get rid of their outstanding debt and then opened up just one store.

It is a decision by Fortunoff and the new owners that they will continue to accept them.
She also referenced this article when I mentioned that there is an article out there and she said that was the decision that Sharper Image made and isn't necessarily true for every company that files for bankruptcy. It is up to each individual place.
