PSA: Coram girl, 2, killed by fallen TV set in her home
Coram girl, 2, killed by fallen TV set in her home Bill Mason March 25, 2008
A 2-year-old Coram girl died after a 75-pound television set fell and struck her in the head, Suffolk police said yesterday.
Angelina Cook was attempting Friday to retrieve a remote control from the top of the television when the accident occurred, police said.
Police did not say whether anyone was watching the child at the time of the incident. The 25-inch television was resting on a microwave cart, police said.
When police arrived at the home about 7:30 p.m., they found the child unconscious with a serious head injury, investigators said.
The toddler was taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center where she was pronounced dead, police said.
Homicide detectives, who are investigating the incident, were not available yesterday to furnish any additional information.
Source: Newsday ======= I know at least one mom on here that had a similar incident with minor injuries to the child.
Please, please secure your dressers, tvs, etc. Maddie was never a "climber" & then she showed up with a hair ribbon from the top of her dresser. She showed me how she got it & I nearly had a heart attack.

Its soo scarey how fast things happen. My sister has a gate to block my nephew from getting into her kitchen, well someone left it open one day and she found him on the countertop.. he climbed up, thank goodness she caught him before something terrible had happened.

This is just horrible. It is very important that everyone has a TV safety strap to avoid things like this from happening. We have it on our TV's.

Re: PSA: Coram girl, 2, killed by fallen TV set in her home
I know a mom on here whose dc pulled a tv down in seconds while they were in the room. And another who had a different piece of furniture fall on them. Luckily only minor injuries.
This is why I keep the tv in our playroom gated off, even though some people think it's excessive. As much as they listen while I'm in the room, I need to know they are safe while I'm making meals, showering, etc.

That was my little girl Probably the scariest day of my life Thankfully she was ok, but we are talking about a 70lb tv...it could have ended far worse. I always assumed it was secure and she could never pull it down on herself. I was in the room when it happened; it takes only seconds for things like this to happen. If I even as much as she her lean on anything, I freak out on her. Better for her to have bruised feelings than have her lose her life. I'm sure these parents are beyond devastated

Same here!!!!!! However, I read an article abut how sometimes those anti tip furniture straps will just tear through the wall and everyting comes toppling down. I do not know what to do and I keep asking DH.

Re: PSA: Coram girl, 2, killed by fallen TV set in her home
last year when my middle daughter was 5 she put her chair up to her dresser to get something out of the top drawer but all the drawers were open.....the dresser tipped forward and thankfully my dd jumped out of the way
I KNOW what the outcome could have been it makes me sick still when I think about it

Alexis and Jaedyn climbed up a dresser to get to the TV that was sitting on top of it...they were not quite 3 years old...I had only left the room for a moment. When I can back into the room the TV was on Lexi's head. Thank goodness she was OK..a couple of bruises and a broken finger were it...
