PSA donating books at libraries

I went to donate almost 20 books in excellent condition to the Bethpage library. The lady told me they only take books in really good shape (which they were) so I was going to leave them there. Trick is, they stopped giving receipts for the donations years ago.

So I called Plainview/Old Bethpage Library and they don't take donated books at all.

I ended up donating my books to St. Vincent de Paul's along with a ton of clothes and other items. I got receipts for all.

and yes, donating stuff shouldn't be all about getting a receipt but every little tax deduction counts!

I'm glad that you found someplace that could give you a receipt Chat Icon I think it's different with each library because of who is actually receiving/accepting the books. For instance, at the library that I work at the women at the front desk will take your donations; however, they are actually given to a separate community organization called the "Friends of the Library," who then in turn sells them to raise money for the library. It's my understanding that the library staff will not write out receipts because we're not the ones that are actually keeping the donations. We're just accepting them on the Friends' behalf. It's probably different at each library, but I thought that might provide a little insight as to why some of "us" won't issue receipts Chat Icon

ok, that makes sense. That was not explained to me. I would have gladly donated directly to any organization that they directed me to.

I donate frequently to St. Vincent and Goodwill but I wanted to donate directly to a place that has books!

I *think* the Half Hollow Hills Library still gives receipts.

It's a shame they didn't explain that to you. It was really nice of you to try though! Chat Icon
