PSA: Don't feed bread to birds and ducks!
If you feed bread, popcorn, or potato chips to birds and ducks, you're doing them more harm than good. There is zero nutrition in this stuff and it can cause health problems and permanent disfigurement in young birds. They eat it because it's filling and they don't know any better.
Botulism found in Babylon Village birds at Argyle Park - possibly due to old bread being fed to them
Botulism typically arises during hot temperatures. The bacteria that produces the botulism toxin can be found in dead fish or other dead animals or old bread. Birds typically are paralyzed, causing them to drown. Also, when water levels drop during a period of extreme heat, the lake is more prone to botulism.
What it comes down to is - even though people get a thrill by feeding them, you're not doing them any favors.

I have heard this...not to feed bread to the birds.
My dad raises homing pigeons and he always told us not to throw bread on the ground because it's no good for the birds.

 I was just telling DH last weekend about how I used to go to Eisenhower Park and feed the geese and it was so fun! I guess we'll not be putting that on our to-do list.

OMG, as soon as I read this I called my mom in Florida who loves to feed the ducks near her, and always feeds them bread. She doesn't have her cell phone on her and guess where she is?

yea we took my niece and nephews down to the eisenhower pond a few weeks ago to feed the ducks some break and there were signs everywhere not to, so we didnt. they were said but i had to explain to them what all the signs meant.

Good for you! There have been signs like that along the Bronx river for YEARS! and people still feed the damn ducks right in front of the sign!

YES, GOOD FOR YOU! If you teach the kids not to do it, hopefully they'll teach/tell others too! 
A lot of people only care about how feeding wildlife makes them feel. Rather than the wildlife itself.

OMG, Thank you for posting this! I get so upset when I see people feeding the birds bread and popcorn.
I don't know if they're everywhere, but I go to Agway and buy 'game bird pellets' it's like .25 (cents) a pound in their bulk section and you can feed the ducks something REALLY healthy!
You can also be a TOTAL freak and buy a huge bag and drive around with it in the back of your car like I do.
