PSA!! Please READ!

I beg you all to check your insurance coverage. Please make sure you are insured with both disability insurance and life insurance. You never know when you will suffer a disability or worse.

My brother had no disability insurance. SSI is not enough to live on. If he comes out of this disabled he will have to go on welfare. This is a nightmare. Also, his life insurance is not enough to bury him God forbid that happens.

Please, please, please take care of your affairs before something tragic happens.

Great! Do you know that you are more likely to suffer a disability in your lifetime than to die young? Disability insurance is even more important than life insurance. It provides you with an income if you cannot work. This income is based on what you have earned so it more than likely will cover most of your living expenses without living in financial hardship.

I couldn't agree more! And you wouldn't believe the fight you have to put up to get SSI-disability.
Unfortunately I know this 1st hand, do to DH being in a very serious accident in June 05. He may never go back to work.

I wish you all the best. I hope everything works out for your brother.

Re: PSA!! Please READ!

I'm so glad you brought this up.

When I was signing up for benefits at my job - they provide us with Short Term Disability and I though to myself - what if something were to happen to me - so I signed up for Long-Term Disability - it is only like $6 per pay period. For $144/year, I'll take the peace of mind.

My life insurance is 2 times my salary. I don't know if that is good or not, but at least it is something.

I signed up for both long and short term at my job- the HR person said most people miss that- I felt like saying- why don't you remind them- it's that your job! it's pretty cheap- less then $5 a paycheck- I don't even notice

my life insurance thru them is 1.5 times my salary- it's better then nothing- since I am not the main breadwinner

be careful with disability insurance through your company - most of the policies state that as long as you can do any job at the company they do not have to pay - so even if you have a severe injury to your brain that causes you just to be able to function int he mail room and not an engineer for the company, they do not have to pay -this is one example that was pointed out in my DH's policy

This is also an issue with SSI-disability.
DH suffered a severe brain injury and we had to hire a lawyer to fight to get him covered under SSI. They feel as long as he can sit at a desk he can work. What they fail to realize is he naps through out the day b/c of this injury and he hardly remembers anything you talked to him about an hr earlier.

Re: PSA!! Please READ!

First of all, I do hope that your brother does survive this and is able to make a full recovery. In the event that he is not, there are other options. I am a Social Security Disability attorney. If you ever had questions you could feel free to FM me, and I'd be happy to try to answer any questions that your family may have.

That being said, just having private disability insurance certainly doesn't guarantee you anything. ALL private disability insurance polices are not created equal. For example, many policies state that for a short period of time (usually 2 years) that if you cannot do your prior work, you wer eligible for the benefits...but after that time period you have to be able to prove that you cannot do any type of work (including minimum wage paying jobs). They can really put you through the ringer over this. Additionally, many policies have built in rules that in order to stay on the policy you MUST apply for Social Security Disability and in the event that you are awared SSD, you will have to pay the insurance carrier back a lot of the money that you are awarded from SSD. Also, not all private disability insurance policies are based solely on a percentage of what you were paid- it may or may not include bonuses, and it may very well state something along the lines of "60% of your prior salary with a CAP of x."

That being said, make sure you read and re-read the long term disability policies that you are signing up for...they are not all created equal- sometimes they are great, other times they are not worth the premium.

I think you're confusing SSI and SSD. SSI is basically federal welfare, based solely upon your assets. SSD is Social Security Disabiilty- based party upon disability, as well as quarters of coverage, and several other factors.

You're correct. After almost 2 yrs you would think I would remember this. It can all be overwhelming.
