PSA: Those cute little turtles
Please don't get them unless you are going to care for them for life which could be 30-40 years. The need a very large tank as they can get to be 12 inches in diameter.
Today a coworker brought one to me that he found on the side of the road and it looked like it was hit by a car. Basically this guy was someone's pet and they probably tossed him when he was too much to care for. I took him to a vet and they will care for him. Based on his size they said he was about 20 years old. Now keep in mind this is a water turtle and there is no body of water near this area. So some jerk probably tossed him after keeping him all that time.

Re: PSA: Those cute little turtles
I have a turtle. She is close to 15 years old.
Still just as active today as she was when I first got her. I have her in a huge 72 gallon bow tank.
They don't require a lot of maintenance, if you already have a nice setup.

Awww, poor turtle!
Is the vet going to rehome him, or are you going to take him in?

They said they rehabilitate him and release him into the wild but I think thats before them and I realized he was a domestic turtle. They work with the STAR Foundation. They have my info, so we'll see what happens. I wouldn't be able to take him... I already have a frog I rescued- DH wouldn't go for a turtle too. What really bothers me is that he is an aquatic turtle and he was on the hot asphalt with no water in sight.
I really hope he's going to be ok. I feel so bad.

Also, they said he was going to be ok but they may have just been telling me that. I asked if I could call later to check but they said they don't do that with wild animals because they get so many. Either way, even if they have to euthanize him it is better than the condition that he was in. His shell was ok but his jaw had a split in it.

What kind? How big? I'd say this guy was about as big as a dinner plate.
ETA: I"m sorry this post wasn't directed at responsible turtle owners such as yourself it was for those people who don't think long term.

Read ear slider, luckily not too big. My female is about 6-7 inches in diameter. And will bite your finger if you stick it in her tank.
But she is cute though, whenever I walk by she goes nuts trying to get my attention.
My dad has a male thats 10-12 inches long and over 20 years old.
