PSA: Whooping Cough alert in Npt-Enpt school district
In case anyone missed the district notice or the article in Newsday, whooping cough has been found in the Ocean Avenue schools.
Crossing my fingers ds (who does extracurricular activites with the Ocean kids) only has a standard croup/cold/fever thing. The ped said yesterday, it's a wait & see kind of thing & he didn't think he had it.

My 2 year old is so sick right now. I have taken her to 2 doctors and they both say her lungs are clear. he sounds like Darth Vader. Shes been choking and coughing until she throws up :( Her cough was croupy. How do I know if its Whooping cough? Bringing her in again tomorrow!

Yes she can still get it but she will likely have a much milder reaction.
My ds has the cold/cough/fever thing going on now too. It's more croup though. If she's doing the noise at the end, absolutely bring her in. It's either whooping cough or croup. PM Pediatrics is great & open until midnight.

I took her to PM pediatrics (love them) and her pediatrician this week, but they said her lungs were clear. I mean it absolutely could be something else, but she had the fever, the cough - choking until she threw up and like coughing fits where I think = OMG when is she going the breathe! Im trying to record it now to show the doctor b/c she doesnt do it constantly. Anyway, Ill bring her in tomorrow if shes not better in the morning.

Re: PSA: Whooping Cough alert in Npt-Enpt school district
Both of my girls got pertussis in the end of July into August.
We had NO clue what it was until Bella had developed pneumonia from it and then Lola started in with Strep and she tested + for pertussis.
BOTH girls are/were fully vaccinated.
Be careful. You will DEFINITELY know the difference in sounds of the cough.
I believe you can listen to the cough sounds on WebMD. There was NO denying it's what Bella had.
Because we did not know what it was... she is now dealing with a type of asthma related situation. There isn't conclusive evidence that it was caused by the pertussis.... but she's never had issues before she got it.
If you don't catch it in time, the test will not show up +. So you have to test early on for a +.
we had to report it to the dept of health and both girls have case #'s and I get frequent calls checking in on them.
It's NOT fun
ETA - the only rx they will give you is a round of the Z-pack (sp?)/Zythromax.... then you will basically hear them cough for "100 days" (another name for it).
