PTA meetings for elementary school
right now DD is in private preschool and all PTA meetings are held during the day, which I never make because I work full time. Are the PTA meeting for your DC held during the day as well or evenings. Just curious for next year when DD is in Kindergarten. Thanks

PTA meetings for elementary school
I think it depends on the dynamics of the school. In our district we have 5 elementaries and all are different. My school has all the meetings at night as most are dual working households. The schools down the road is always during the day because most moms are at home. Regardless of what your school is doing now you can always propose to the PTA to alternate the meetings so more of the membership can attend. Dates and times are change yearly.

Re: PTA meetings for elementary school
We always had night meetings for years. Then they changed each month from morning to night to accommodate people who worked nights.

PTA meetings for elementary school
Ours are in the evenings. But to be honest, I never go. This year I am chairing a committee so I may need to go to one when my event is coming up but between email and my school's PTA Facebook page, I get all the info I need. I have been able to be pretty involved and do a lot during the 2+ years my DD has been in school because all the info comes out through those channels.

Re: PTA meetings for elementary school
My DS's school PTA alternates between mornings and evenings for the monthly meetings to try to accommodate all schedules. Last month we had an evening meeting (held at 7:30 pm), so the next meeting will be a morning (9:00 am) meeting. I think that's a fair way to do it.

Re: PTA meetings for elementary school
In our school (catholic school) it is up to the PTA president. So I would email her and bring up the subject. I like the idea of alternating between day and night meetings.
Ours used to be at night but truthfully 95% of the parents who participate in the PTA are SAHM or working moms with very flexible schedules and nights were more inconvenient for the SAHMs so now our meetings are in the morning after drop off.

Re: PTA meetings for elementary school
They are all in the morning but there is one at night in the Fall and one at night in the Spring. There was a proposal to change it and the board and principal vetoed it. I think it's mostly because we have teachers and the principal at every meeting and they would have to come back at night. They are there for a lot of other night events as it is. I understand the reasons but I'm not happy about it.

ok thanks for your responses. I wouldn't mind the alternating between mornings and night. At least I can attend some of them.

Re: PTA meetings for elementary school
This year all of the meetings are in the mornings. A couple of years ago, meetings were alternated between mornings and nights, but parents didn't go to the meetings at night, so that's why right now they are only in the mornings.

They alternate. One month it's in the morning, the next month it's at night.

The switch from day to night every other time. I find it nasty that they are during the day at all. It's very excluding the the em's.

Re: PTA meetings for elementary school
Ours are supposed to alternate but more than 1/2 are in the morning... it's not even as if they are right after elem school drop off/before most people's work day and working moms could squeeze them in before work.
I work FT and with property taxes being what they are (and yes, I'm a teacher) I think it's completely outdated, unfair and unrealistic to have most or all PTA meetings during the day. 70% of women in America with children work outside of the home.
They have the meetings during the day and then complain 1. only the same few attend and 2. only the same volunteer.
The district where I work only has them at night.

Re: PTA meetings for elementary school
I don't go to them. I tried but they literally read the calendar for the month (which is sent home anyway) so it's such a waste of time.

FWIW, I am a full-time working mom who works from 1pm-9pm. I would love if they had some during the day.

Yes, that's why I think alternating is best, because people have all different needs and preferences. Some working parents work nights, and some stay at home parents are home with babies and toddlers but can more easily attend at night when their spouse is home. At least by alternating, there is -- in theory -- an effort to made to maximize attendance.

Our PTA alternates but it's in the afternoon or evening - I've never seen a meeting scheduled for the mornings.
