Pumping question for those that pump frequently......
I went back to work about 6 weeks ago.
Starting about 3 weeks before I went back, I would pump around 6AM and get about 5-6 ounces. Logan would nurse around 7:30AM.
I would pump about 2PM and get about 5-7 ounces and pump again about 11PM and get 2-4 ounces.
Logan now gets up earlier, about 6:30ish and I nurse him about 6:45 or 7AM. Now a few times in the last 2 weeks I pump AFTER nursing in the AM. I don't get anymore then 2 ounces then. I still keep the same afternoon & evening times to pump.
What's the deal?

Re: Pumping question for those that pump frequently......
If you pump after, it is less because he is probably drinking more. What I do and have been doing for about 7 months now is I only pump when he would normally eat. I don't nurse and then pump. I wasn't getting enough at a time so I only pump when I am at work. When he was just eating milk and no solids, I would pump at work the times that he has his bottle at daycare or he would nurse on the weekend. That way it keeps up my supply and I could pump enough for his bottles day by day. That is just me though.

Sounds to me like it might actually be the same total amount of milk in the morning. When you pumped first thing in the AM and would get 5 ounces and then nurse him, maybe he only got 2-3 ounces. Now with nursing first, he might be BFing those 5 ounces and then you are pumping 2 ounces. It might still be a total of 7-8 ounces total.

I thought that too....but he seemed satisfied if I pumped before (like he got enough).
Now he seems to finish nursing faster, like 20 minutes instead of 30 minutes......like he doesn't have to work as hard to get it.
I need only about 9 ounces of pumped milk a day for his bottles , he takes 3 bottles during the day while I work. (I supplement with a little formula in the bottles). I can rarely pump more then 1 time a day at work.
So now I have 2 worries. 1)Either I risk him not getting enough in the AM by pumping first. 2) Or I risk not pumping enough to put in his bottles.

I never have gotten enough to fill the bottles, so I started to supplement at like 10 weeks. I can really only pump once at work, I have a crappy job & an irregular schedule at work making it almost impossible to do it even 2 times.

Try and do whatever you can. If you continue to pump after u nurse, little by little your supply should increase. In the beginning I was only pumping like 4 to 5 oz a session...now I can pump over 6. There is nothing wrong with supplementing if you need to. I did with my DS. For me it worked well. He still got the vitamins that he needed from the BM and if I couldn't pump enough he would have formula. U are doing a great job!!!
