PUPPP
Well after one week of pure hell I went back to the dermatologist who told me that is was PUPPPS and not scabies like they thought At first I was shocked and then I wanted to kill the doctor since he told me I was contagious and this past weekend my DH came home from training and we couldn't even hug each other!!! I am going to be on Predisone for the next 9 days and they are giving me Elimite for just incase. My DH has to use the Elimite too. So, I know alot of woman get this and I was just curious how any of you handled this and what you were on. My body is totally covered and I had the classic symptoms of scabies but now reading up on PUPPS I see the difference. It's not making me happy since I scratch like crazy and getting now sleep plus I have been out of work for two weeks.

Re: PUPPP
Ugh!!! I had PUPPPs too. It is the worst. I got it in my 8th month and it only goes away when you give birth. I was literally scratching my skin until I bled. It was miserable.
My doctor gave me an ointment that did absolutely nothing. I was too paranoid to take any medicine, so I took a lot of oatmeal baths and used Gold Bond cream.
Hang in there! How far along are you?

Re: PUPPP
I am 36 weeks and it started like a week and a half ago. I have stretch marks on my abdomen and then they started to itch really bad and got red and puffy like. Then my stretch marks on my hips started to itch. From there I have it all over my arms, on my upper back, back of my knees, below my buttocks. They itch so bad espically at night and I can't get any sleep. I was scratching them so of course they look really bad. This is also symptoms of scabies and that's why I thought I had it until they told me today that the biopsy came back saying its compatible with PUPPP. I almost dropped dead on the floor! I went to the Gyno afterwards and the doctor there told me it was PUPPP. So I guess now I have to deal with it for the next 4 weeks but I must say I am very relieved to hear its PUPPP.

Re: PUPPP
I had PUPPS as well. No fun at all. Sarna lotion (over the counter) helped with the itching.

Re: PUPPP
I had one of the worst cases of PUPPS known to mankind...
Mine started @ about 32 weeks.... and they ended up taking DS early @ 37 weeks 3 days (after having an amnio that stated his lung were full developed)
Mine too started in my stretch marks and eventually spread EVERYWHERE- I would go w/o sleep for days- and the only time I would sleep was in the bathtub- DH would find me asleep in the bathtub when he would get home from work- he would get so mad at me- but while in the oatmeal bath I would feel the slightest bit of relief!
Sarna cream (not the odorless kind) also was a godsend- again it was min. relief for a short period of time- but it was a sort of relief- I went through like a bottle a day!
I too was put on prednisone... for it started off at 10mg/ day- I felt NO improvement whatsoever... after crying and pleading with my Dr- she bumped me up to 60mg/day and then after a few days tamper off...
The higher dose did seem to help- but beware steroids are nothing to fool around with- and please make sure you taper off... Lets say I usually took my pill @ 5pm... if I would forget to take it- or something by 6pm I was a raging lunatic... I would feel so sick and irritable (again this didnt happen with the small dosage- just the higher one)
By the time they took the baby- I was back down to 10mg/day however I had to be on a steroid drip during my c-sect.
Past of me believes that part of the reason the do the steroid treatment is because they know they may have to take the baby early- and they want the baby lungs to be ready (at least in my case) DS was almost 3 weeks early and 7lbs 12oz. and lungs fully developed!
You can search through my old posts.... Im sure I have tons more info in there...
Just know that this isnt nothing- So many Dr.'s dismiss it as no big deal- and it is a big deal- I couldnt even drive a car at the end- I went w/o sleep for days- and was like a Zombie! Its very uncomfortable- and there is no cure but giving birth!
Feel free to FM- I hope I didnt freak you out! I just feel so strongly about people taking it seriously- I had so many people say "so what you are itching- no big deal" and I know 1st hand its so much more than just being itchy!

Re: PUPPP
I am not going to take this lightly. I will be on the Prednisone for 9 days and now that I am close to delivery I will be seen weekly so I will be showing them the rash each week and see what they say. I have been using the Sarna since last week and then stopped because I was given Aristocort cream. I have decided not to take the Elimite since this isn't scabies and tonight I took the oral meds and have not put anything else on. I want to give the body a break and see if I can go without cream. Is this contagious at all? I didn't see anywhere that it is. Thanks ladies for all your responses. My mind is at ease knowing what this is. Thanks Princessmaris, I will FM you since I will probably have questions.

Not contagious at all.... You are basically allergic to your placenta- the itch is internal- which is why no matter how much you scratch you are still itchy!
Just wondering but did they run blood work to make sure its not cholestasis???
Please FM even if you wanna vent- Just having someone that understands how uncomfortable you are- and that you arent just being a baby is important (GOd knows that I found that through someone on here- and thank god I did)
Aside from extreme discomfort and the loss of sleep- its not dangerous for you or the baby....

The bloodwork was prob to test your bile functions- which is to test for cholestasis....
All I know was it took like a month to get those results back- it was horrible!!!

I never had this but I can say that Sarna lotion is wonderful, I used it for hives once and it was the only thing that helped me not lose my mind.
