Puppy stage-nipping/biting
HELP...
How do I disipline Abby?
She loves to bite. Its not done in a mean fashion. As soon as she gets overly excited she bites and bites. We want to continue to play with her at these times, but cant cause she hurts!
We yell, we make her calm down before continuing and we push her to the side with a chew toy.
BUT...she wants to play "with US" and it starts right back.
Shes 4 and 1/2 months old now.
Is this a phase? Will it pass?
Is there something we should be doing?
We find outselves getting so mad at her because we want to play but she wont stop biting.

Re: Puppy stage-nipping/biting
We had the same problem with Bella, it was to the point I had bruises and scratches up and down my arms. We were just consistent with telling her "NO" and saying "ouch" and if she bit us we would walk away from her. She finally stopped biting at about 5 or 5 1/2 months. She is 7 months now and is very good with the play bite, she is very gentle, and now when you say "ouch" she will lick you.

Re: Puppy stage-nipping/biting
You can try to use a noise to distract her. then when she is distracted & not biting you, you can stick a chew toy in her mouth.

Re: Puppy stage-nipping/biting
When she bites, grab her muzzle and say VERY STERNLY "NO!" Hold on for a few seconds. Also try doing submission excercises - hold her under the front legs up in the air facing you. When she squirms, growl at her. Hold her like this for 30 - 45 seconds a few times a day. When she does this without groiwling, praise her when you put her down.
These are the practices found in a book my niece has and her puppy has improved immensely. I will try to get the name of the book for you.
Remember when training your dog, you must be consistent, and stern.

You can try this or you can have a spray bottle full of water. When she bites, spray her lightly, say "NO" firmly & when she stops the bad activity, praise her and give her a chew toy.
