puppy trying to eat poop

ok, so I know this is gross...but Riley keeps trying to eat her poop! Its so bad that I can't leave her outside by herself b/c she will eat it! Chat Icon

We asked the vet what we should do...and they gave us a powder to put in her food that would make the poo taste even worse than it does...she still tries to eat the poo...
we put red pepper flakes on the poo...she ate it...
we are now trying pumpkin filling, b/c we heard that helps too...and she is still trying to eat itChat Icon
I don't get it...we tell her "no" and pull her away from it and she still goes for it....and its not like she is hungry b/c after she eats she will still try to eat the poo!

I'm disgusted with this apparent gross habit she has gotten into...neither of my two other dogs have ever done this...anyone ever have this problem or have any suggestions?

TIA!

Have you told the vet that his recommendation didn't work? Maybe he'd suggest something else.

Or take a can of marbles and when you see him doing it, shake the can - they'll slowly learn that it's a bad thing to do.

That's an excellent idea.

Just so you know... It's TOTALLY normal! Esp. for puppies. Meat tenderizer should work if you sprinkle just a little bit in the food.

papaya enzyme. you can get it at a health food store. it breaks down any remaining food particles that may be on the poo.

We tried this...didn't work.

We just had to be very vigilant and pick it up right away and keep telling her "NO".
She's growing out of it at 8 almost 9 months old.
Keep at it. They get it sooner or later.

It takes that longChat Icon ...I was hoping that it would be something they grow out of quickly!

Re: puppy trying to eat poop

We had this problem with our dog also. I went to Petco and bought Coprophagia Deterrent - Stop Stool Eating for Dogs. It is chewable tablets that you crush into their food--Our dog is small (6lbs) and we do a quarter of a tablet 2 times a day and it has totally stopped the problem. Good luck!!!

Re: puppy trying to eat poop

We had this problem with Bonnie too, when she was wee wee pad training. I tried to add stuff to her food to make her poop taste gross. I tried stopping her when I saw it. But nothing worked.

Then one day she just stopped doing it. She was only doing it for a few weeks, a month at the most.

Re: puppy trying to eat poop

Peanut did this for a while! I don't remember exactly how long it lasted maybe 5 or 6 months.

Every time I brought it up to the vet they said it's no big deal. It means she is missing a mineral or vitamin which is in the poop. He said if it grossed us out we could pull her away from it or just let her be.

We tried to pull her away from it everytime. And eventually she just stopped.

Re: puppy trying to eat poop

definately get your dog out of this now, my dog did this and is now slowly losing all his teeth because he did it for so long ( i didn't realize he was doing it at firstChat Icon )
i agree get the stop stool eating tablets and be vigilant about picking up the poop so theres none for him to eat

Sorry, I just have to respond to this one.

I doubt your dog is losing all of it's teeth by doing this. If s/he eats poop AND you only feed her/him soft food or table food, THOSE are more likely reasons for tooth decay or loss. You have to feed your dog some kibble to keep the crunch and help them to naturally clean their teeth.

ETA: Bella has BIG probs with eating her poop - she STILL does it and she's almost FOUR. HER teeth are not decayed. Let's not scare this poor girl with misinformation!!!

Re: puppy trying to eat poop

I have read that if a dog eats its own poo, they are not being fed enough nutritional food.

I dont know if this is true. Anyone know?

What kind of food do you feed the pup?

That was what I heard too. Maybe what if you try changing the food to a high quality protein?

My pups ate science Diet DRY ONLY for puppies. Neither one ate their poop.

I agree!

And crunchy food is the best thing tokeep a dog's teeth healthy.

Re: puppy trying to eat poop

our pup out grew this nasty behavor also....thank God. But the vet did say there is some type of pill that you could give to him when he eats and it makes his poopy really foul and he will stay away from it.

yes I read this, but we feed her Purina puppy food, which we gave to my other two dogs no probs...I was just concerned b/c my Vet was honestly not too concerned about it...and I'm just soooo grossed out by it

thank you all for your advice...we will just stay on top of it and make sure we watch her when she goes out and pull her away or pick up the poop!

Re: puppy trying to eat poop

My Yorkie is a year and 1/2 and was STILL doing this - it was disgusting - I thought she was 'playing' w/ it when she ran outside, but no, she eats it -

I started giving her a vitamin every day, many people told me dogs to this b/c some sort of vitamin or mineral deficency - I don't know it that's true, but it seems to be helping -
