Puppy's First Vet Appt today - UPDATE
DH is taking the Puppy to the Vet today and it's all I am thinking about (I am at work). She is not due for her 2nd shot until end of Jan as she is only 9-weeks old, but we wanted to get her checked out now.
Anyone have experience with this and what do they usually do on the first appt?
Also, since this is our first puppy how does it work with paying Vet's? Do you pay right then and there or they bill you?
Thanks

You pay right then and there...they will probably just give her an exam. You can usually pay cash, cc or check at a vets.
BTW, I just saw her in your photo album and she is adorable!!

Re: Puppy's First Vet Appt today
They will give a few vaccines...be warned, one goes in the puppies nose...and they don't like it at all. Also they will most likely draw blood and do a heartworm test and a fecal test (which checks for worms) they will weigh your pup and make sure everything is on track. yes you pay after you see the dr...
Good Luck! your puppy is adorable!

Re: Puppy's First Vet Appt today
They gave us a container to return a day or so later with a fresh fecal test.
The vet just checked Daisy over to be sure she was healthy and reactive.
We didn't have any shots in her nose - she always got them in her behind area.
They'll give you heartworm medicine once she's cleared that you'll give her 1x a month.

Re: Puppy's First Vet Appt today
Thanks guys.
She did great, but the vet just called me and said her feces came back with some bacteria in it . She said it is very common in Puppies and she just needs to take a pill and I have to clean her little butt after she goes to the bathroom.
I can't remember the name of it, started with a G

Re: Puppy's First Vet Appt today - UPDATE
Is it Giardia (sp?). My brothers dog has this. He's been on medication for a long time because it took them a while to get a good diagnosis.

I think it is Giardiasis. Something like that. I can't speak of it, no experience with it. How long does the vet say pup needs to be on meds?

She said she has to come back in a month and it should be all good. I just need to clean her so it does not come back and is completely out of her system.
It's not a parasite and can't kill her or make her sick thank god!!! she said sometimes if puppies eat thier poop they can get it also.
I am just so glad we took her and found out now.

All puppies can have worms when you get them. So that's why all pups' poops are tested. Was it worms?

Nope, they did not say it was worms. It def started with a G like the OP said. When I speak to DH I will get the exact name of it.

It is probably Giardia. Porter had this when we first adopted him. Just make sure that you clean up after your dog when she goes to the bathroom, it also helps to clean her butt with baby wipes after she poops. You don't want her eating it and then getting it all over again. Porter was on Panacure D for 7 days and that got rid of it. You might or might not notice some blood and mucus in your dogs stool. That is common with giradia. If you do call the vet. They might want you to give an extra dose of meds

Denver has this when we got him. He went through 2 rounds of meds and has been clear ever since. Good luck

USE TABASCO!!!! This worked like a charm. When she went, I left it on the wee wee pad and put tabasco all over it, she went over licked it and never did it again . Might take a few tries because they are curious, but it will work.
