Put me at ease here....6 months old and tongue sticking out...

The rational side of me says this is just fine and totally normal, but the "Google" in me makes me worry Chat Icon

DS (almost 6 months) always seems to have his tongue sticking out (not when he's asleep, only awake-prob 70% of the time) He does sometimes "put it away" but for the most part he looks like this ----> Chat Icon ...I think its adorable but then you go online and panic sets in of-course....

His tongue does seem a little on the big side (though HE himself is on the big side having weighed 11-8 at birth Chat Icon ), and he did just get a TOOTH today Chat Icon , so I am hoping this is all relevant...his tongue also gets a quiver to it especially when he gets excited/happy...

Didnt have this with my other 2, so this is why I am wondering how common this is....Plan on asking the ped, but wanted to ask here also...

Heres the "tongue" in question....

My first thought was maybe he'd be ready for table food? But maybe not in the bath.

We started him on baby cereal/fruit and veggies at 5 months....He does "ok" with it, but doesn't devour it like my other 2 did ....His tongue thrust is getting better and he seems to be getting the hang of it more and more...

But in all seriousness, as a newborn kylies tongue would sometimes stick out. I too looked it up online and what you see is scary stuff. He coyld be tongue tied, have a big tongue, or just likes to stick it out.Chat Icon

Well, I wasn't actually 'worried" about anything specific and googled more out of curiosity ( thinking maybe it was a sign of impending teeth etc...)

Then ofcourse I stumble on some damn site that discusses Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (that is a disorder associated with an increased risk of childhood cancer) and it discusses the tongue thing, stork bites (which he has one) macrosomia (birth weight and height > than the 90th% etc.. and a few other things which don't really apply at all .....

So naturally now, I am worried about something thats is probably ridiculous but thanks to Google, here I am Chat Icon

And I lost both parents to cancer...so I am extra sensitive to that word...

My cousin's DD has BW syndrome. Her tongue has been out, all day every day since birth. It does NOT look like your DS, her tongue basically does not fit in her mouth, my cousin and her DH are now deciding whether to have surgery on their DD to cut back the size of her tongue as speech therapy is helping a little but really not so much. I'm not a doctor of course but I would say not to worry. Chat Icon
