putting 16 month old in a bed

Just wondering how it would be if I moved my 16 month old DD into a bed. I think she would like it better than the crib, but I wonder about waking up during the night & getting up. I have a video monitor so I would see & hear her, but since she usually wakes up at night, I'm afraid she would bolt for the door & wander around! Is she too young?

Re: putting 16 month old in a bed

My oldest was in a crib till 2 1/2. My middle one was in a crib till 15 months, but thats ONLY because he started climbing out and I was scared to death he would hurt himself. My baby is in a crib (13 months old) and will remain there for as long as possible.

I guess it depends on the child. NO way my 16 month old could handle a bed yet.

Re: putting 16 month old in a bed

The thing is, she has been in our room in a crib since birth. We just finished a 4th BR in the house (my 2 SD's each have a room plus us), so we are getting ready to move her sister downstairs & DD into her own room. I was thinking it may be better since she usually falls asleep in my bed & then I put her in the crib so this way, she'll just fall asleep in her own bed & stay there. I just don't know what signs other than climbing out of the crib, which she tries to put her leg up over the top but can't quite reach yet, that I should look for to know she is ready.

Re: putting 16 month old in a bed

i put my boys in a todler bed at lil before 17 months.. it worked great!

i do shut there door at nite. if they got out of there bed they either cried or knocked at the door. i know some people jsut put a gate up at the doorway as well.....

it took them 3 days to get used to the bed. i say if you think shes ready then go for it! i knew mine were because they started climbing out of the cribs!!!

good luck!

I only moved my son when he started climbing out. And it was so difficult because he started walking all over the house, and we had to put up a gate in his room. He would then throw tantrums, nearly hurting himself. I intend to keep my dd in crib as long as possible. Each child is different though

Re: putting 16 month old in a bed

My sister was put in a twin bed at 18 months.

DS who is 15 months is not ready at all for a twin bed. He moves way to much at night and I find him many times in the reversed direction. He still leans against the sides of the crib. Even with a rail, I know he is not ready yet.

I was in a twin bed before 18 months with bed rails and I was fine.

I think my 17 month old could handle it, but he likes his crib, so no rush.

I know my friend transitioned her daughter around that age and it went fine was well!

My girls were all in beds around 18 months. Basically b/c they were climbing out....They all transitioned very well.

Caden is showing signs of being a climber also so we'll have to wait and see..if he climbs out..into a bed he will go.

As far as wondering around during the night..they usually make a beeline straight into bed with mommy and daddy.

Re: putting 16 month old in a bed

Thanks all! I'll let you know in a few weeks what happens. I'm going to use the gate since her room will be within striking distance of the kitchen & front door before she gets to us.

Re: putting 16 month old in a bed

i put DS into a twin size bed around 15/17 months b/c he was climbing out of his crib. I gated the stairs and he transitioned really well!
