Putting baby down awake...
When did you start doing this? We are having an impossible time getting Miranda to nap. She just refuses and fights sleep something fierce. I know she's still in the stage they say not to CIO but what about putting her down awake and letting her fuss a little but not cry. She is just miserable when she doesn't nap and I have no idea what else to try.

Re: Putting baby down awake...
4.5 months is when we started CIO. Before that I depended on the swing plus pacifier or nursing for sleep.
If you think just a little fussing would lead to sleep, that sounds fine as well. That wouldn't have worked here earlier, but every baby is different!!

Re: Putting baby down awake...
We have just started to be able to do this with my daughter now- she is 7 1/2 months. She ALWAYS fights her sleep. She is 'nosy' and doesn't like to miss anything. Since she has started teething we have found giving her a pacifier, her favorite puppy and the FP bird thing on her crib it take about 10-12 minutes of whining and she will go to sleep sometimes. When we let her CIO she got herself so upset she puked.
I hope you have better luck then we did. I think we waited too long to try and get her to do this.

Could you share the process with me. Like what kind of fussing you would tolerate and at what point you would pick him up. I know I am not ready for full on CIO but this child has got to sleep. She gets to the point that her eyes are so red from exhaustion but she refuses to sleep.

I never picked him up, but then he never really cried either, he only fussed.
For naps, it sort of went like this: when I noticed he had been up for close to 2 hrs and showed signs of tiredness (rubbing eyes, staring into space, loss of enthusiam for the current toy, etc) I would immediately remove all stimulation (turn off music or tv in the background, take away toys, stop talking to him, etc), give him his binkie, and tuck a blanket around him.
For naps there is usually little to no fussing, he's out within 5 minutes as long as I catch him early enough. If he's over tired there will be more fussing.
For bedtime, it took some training but it wasn't nearly as bad as I was afraid it would be. But again, he never cried, only fussed. Maximum fussing I would allow at night was 30 mins. But I did check-and-console in time increments. I would go in after 5 mins, give him the pacifier, then 10, then 15 and so on. I think he only fussed for 30 mins once or twice. He would always fall back asleep at least for an hour or two before waking up to fuss again. Again, I never picked him up and I kept talking to him to a bare minimum and I would not use a playful voice. Eventually, he slept through the night with no fussing at all - that came when I finally figured out his ideal bedtime, which sadly (in some ways) is alot earlier than you might expect - between 7 - 7:30pm.
It sounds to me like she is definitely getting overtired (which I'm sure you realize) so try putting her down for a nap after 1.5 - 2hrs of being awake. Once you put her down, take away all toys and don't talk to her or play with her so she can learn a way to soothe herself to sleep - that's the best, when they don't need your assistance to fall asleep.
If you like I can give you more details on what worked for me, feel free to ask.

Thanks for the great advice Sandra! I am always open to any suggestions from mom's who have been through it, especially in the sleep department.

Just a quick question from a mom-to-be, trying to learn as much as possible: what is CIO?

Re: Putting baby down awake...
I've already do this & they are 6 weeks. They are tired & I know it. they usually don't scream they might whine a bit but, then they are out.
I started CIOP w/ Patrick at 3 months. He would never want to sleep. but, Mommy knew best.
