Putting up a Xmas Tree with a Toddler?!

OK...I didnt have to worry about this last year because DD was only 6 mths - now she will be 18 mths for Xmas. How do I safely put up the tree without her pulling it down and breaking all of the ornaments? I can see it now! UGH Ideas?

I've seen people put the baby gate things around it. Other than that, I have no ideas!!

I just put mine up and decorated it today Chat Icon Now I just know that Emma will start crawling and grabbing at the ornaments since I put it up Chat Icon

So far my kids have never messed with the tree. We always just put the VERY breakable (Swarovski Crystal) up high.

I was wondering the same thing. Not because of the ornaments but because my ds has turned into a little monkey. He tries to climb everything. I can just picture him trying to climb the tree.

Re: Putting up a Xmas Tree with a Toddler?!

We put wire from the trunk of the tree to the baseboards to tie it in place and only put plastic or soft ornaments on the bottom.

We do this with fishing line and also do it at the top (attaching to the sides of our doorway/window moulding), and put only non-breakable ornaments at the bottom. Everything gets wired onto the branches really well in case there's any shakin'.Chat Icon

We have the same problem. DS is 15 months old and loves to touch everything. We are not putting lights on the tree this year, putting big ornaments on top and not putting breakable ones on the tree.

We are putting it in our formal living room which is gated off so they cant get in. Dont know what we'll do on christmas day though.

I dont really have any advice but I can tell you what I did....

The twins were not quite 2 years old their 2nd Xmas they just wouldnt stay away from that darn tree...They were really afraid of this bouncing Tiger doll that they had gotten as a gift....I know Im horrible....I put Bouncing Tiger in front of the tree whenever I wasnt in the room...I know..I know...But it worked and they learned to stay away from the tree.

ditto, child friendly ornaments on the bottom, more fragile towards the top.

DS has never bothered with our tree.

Re: Putting up a Xmas Tree with a Toddler?!

DD was 11 1/2 months at Christmas last year and we simply taught her to look but don't touch. She was GREAT with it...

this year may be a whole different ballgame!
I'd try to isolate the tree....maybe a corner so that way at least part of it is not able to be easily reached

This year we are putting it in the foyer and just getting a smaller tree so it will fit (our ceilings are lower in the foyer). Then I will gate of the foyer so he can't get intChat Icon

Ditto. With my DS.

HOWEVER, DD is the complete opposite, and I am guess we will be putting up the play-yard gates around it this year. We shall see!

Re: Putting up a Xmas Tree with a Toddler?!

Katherine was 15 months last Christmas and it totally was NOT a problem. We taught her not to touch it. She was so cooperative to the point when she saw me fixing an ornament she said, "No no no!" Chat Icon

Anyway, I was shocked that she was so good, but my mom watched kids for about 12 years in her home and not one kid ever broke/damaged ornaments or the tree...she never had gates, etc. and either did we growing up.

We did tie fishing wire from the top of the tree to the wall behind it and didn't put any glass ornaments up just in case.
