Q about CIO when your child stands in the crib - worried about falling backwards...

We tried CIO for the first time last night. DS is fine with getting up and down in the crib that is not the issue - problem is he gets so hysterical he lets go and he is practically jumping up and down - he can stand alone for a few seconds but after that he flails backwards and I am worried he will hurt himself badly. We kept going in and putting him back up but he kept getting back up! What would you do?

They usually fall on their bottoms, I would see what happens.

My DC is 9.5 mos and the reason why we are letting him CIO is because he gets up all night long...in fact, some nights he won't go to sleep at all! He hates his crib and will not sleep in it unless he is completely wiped out Chat Icon I've been rocking him to fall asleep and every time he wakes up, some nights I spend more time rocking then sleeping! Oh, and he won't let me sit down and rock him either! I must be standing! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Q about CIO when your child stands in the crib - worried about falling backwards...

my sister told me with hannah to practice with her during the day how to bend her knees from the standing position so she knows to get down on her bum... (i had questioned her about this bc we used ferber, she was sleeping the the nite after 3 nites...then a few nites later, she learned how to pull herself up, and so she was doing this in her crib and couldnt get back down, so....we taught her during the day how to get down, and no problem, she was back to sleeping thru the nite within a nite or two...)

I feel like it is me talking! That's exactly what we were going through and we just got to the point this week where we couldnt do it anymore. Standing and bouncing with a pacifier no less! Then once we would put him down..he was up 40 min later...my husband and i would maybe sleep 2 hrs total a nite!!

I was worried about the same thing when he started standing in the crib - he would fall backwards sometimes - mostly on his tush - sometimes he would bang his head -- he was always fine though!

Oh he knows how to get back down - he goes up and down very well. The problem is when he is in that hysterical state he doesn't want to get down! He is holding on jumping up and down and he lets go and thinks he will just stand on his own but, he only can for a few seconds - if he tries to step he falls Chat Icon

Well DS has NEVER slept but it has gotten much worse - he has 4 teeth already and at first i thought it is what was happingint but now this has been going on for over a month straight so its not just that. For us, its clear that his thinking changed - he became very aware of what was happening and what he wanted and didn't want Chat Icon
