Q about eggs and flu short for 8 month old baby
DS will be 8 months this week.
Our Ped wants us to give DS a flu shot. Apparently, it's going around.
He wants use to give DS some eggs to see if he is allergic.
Did anyone did that?
Isn't he too young for eggs (although it's just to see if he has allergies!)?
Isn't he too young for the flue shot?
DS is in daycare so he is more proned to be sick than a child not going to daycare.

I THINK ITS GREAT your doc recommended giving eggs to see. Alot of docs just give you the shot. While I am not a shot fanatic I believe in necessary vaccinations, I space them but give them. Your dc is in daycare and more likely to get something and the flu is rampid I would def give it. Eggs are a high allergen I think if there is a allergy you will see it as you are giving the eggs.Edited to add. The flu shot is for the young the immune impaired-asthmatics and elderly, I didn't have to do this because I didn't give it yet but I have heard of giving the eggs to see.

I could be wrong so no flames please, but I'm pretty sure this years flu is resistent against the vaccine that was given out. You may want to check with your ped about that.
The flu shot is recommended for 6 months plus.
If you're going to give DS an egg, please have Benadryl handy in case he has a reaction.

Re: Q about eggs and flu short for 8 month old baby
DD (nearing 8 mos.) just got her 2nd round of the flu shot yesterday. I'd rather have her get the shot than get the actual flu - it's VERY nasty and can be really damaging to our little ones.
My ped said I can give DD eggs, but JUST the yolk. We tried that yesterday and she was fine (didn't love it, but that's another story ).

Completely agree. I was hesitant about her getting it, but wanted to protect her from the nasty & potentially dangerous flu to her little system too. She got the first dose around 6.5 months, the next one 2 weeks later. You have to do what you feel comfortable with though.
There was no discussion of eggs at all (although I did know about it), and thankfully DD didn't have a reaction.

We were never told to try eggs first, but we did give DD the shot. She had it in Nov and Dec and was fine. DH and I have no food allergies and DD had done fine with everything we gave her, so I wasn't worried. Also, my ped didn't say anything about trying eggs first. She was 8 months when she got the shot.

my doctor insisted that i give both my dc eggs before getting the flu shot. He is not too young to try it and not too young for the shot. I think the flushot for babies is a great thing. I would definitly do it. The flu is deadly for babies.

My ped never mentioned anything about eggs and fortunately we opted not to get the flu shot because we later found out that he was allergic to eggs. Isn't it late in the season for a flu shot anyway?

Re: Q about eggs and flu short for 8 month old baby
DD#1 was ineligible for the flu shot her first year--she was newborn. At 9 mos. was when the ped. told us to start eggs.
With DD#2, the ped. told us to start eggs at 6 mos. so that she could get the flu shot. I thought that was weird considering the instructions for DD#1, so I did not give her the eggs, nor the flu shot.
I was just at the ped. for her 9 month well-visit and at that point had not started eggs...so no flu shot, which I had already decided against anyhow. My doctor said that it looks like the flu may stick around until late March, but also said she wouldn't urge me to have Abby get it since they've seen more than a few cases in the office of kids who had gotten the flu shot who ended up with the flu...evidently there's a strain/s that is not covered by the shot.
PS. My friend was not advised to start eggs before her son got the shot.
PPS. The vaccines given at this time (since it's so late in the season) are likely to contain preservative, so if that's a concern, be sure to ask!

I didnt give DS the flu shot and neither I nor DH have gotten it. I also think it is a waste of injecting something else into your child when the flu is resistant to the shot this season anyway and it is widespread.
As for the eggs, I have given DS food with eggs in it (such as pastina, etc.) but not straight eggs. My ped. said not until after 1 yr.
