Q about parking tickets
i have unpaid tix (damn alternate side parking) from a few years ago.
they started to add on interest charges and they built up so fast and i stopped working i couldnt pay them.
NOW i want to get a car and my registration is suspended til i pay up.
so i called and foudn out i owe $900.
So, my question is this. is there a way to get it lowered? dh was saying if i go to traffic court and tell them i cant afford it all they will lessen it for me.
i guess takign away those extra chrges and whatnot.
i figured its worth a shot but how do i even do this?

Re: Q about parking tickets
Honestly, if you sat on parking tickets for that long... no, you probably aren't going to get out of them now.
I doubt inability to pay will be a major concern with the judge if you are purchasing a car and trying to register it. (Sorry, just being honest)
I'd pay up.

Re: Q about parking tickets
It's worth a try. I know people who have spoken to the judge and told them they couldn't pay the ticket and the judge lowered it. If it's Nassau county, I have been to the Traffic Violation Center a bunch of times. I think you can wait on line and speak to someone about setting up an appearance time.
ETA: I wouldn't mention that you are buying a new car. Just pretend like you want to get these tickets cleared up.

Re: Q about parking tickets
It will depend on the judge you get. You can try to get them plead down, and you may be successful... but chances are you'll be in for the full amount.
However, you can always luck out and get a sympathetic judge.

Ah, well, then. That makes your case sound a little better!
Good luck. I accrued several parking tickets I couldn't afford to pay in law school - Luckily by the time I was able to afford to pay them, I just mailed them in and they cashed my checks... so I guess they didn't charge me interest. I had a lot, too. Good luck! I hope you can at least get them down to the original amount!

Re: Q about parking tickets
i guess it's worth a shot to try and get them lowered, but if you've been sitting on them for a few years you might want to try and get it taken care of soon... they will tow your car for unpaid tickets - then you will have to pay all the tickets in full AND to get your car back.

Re: Q about parking tickets
thanks everyone.
oh, i havent had that car in ages.
actually, the reason i got so many tickets was because it broke down and i couldnt mov eit form side to side for alternate parking.
yeah, i just want to get it to the original amount.

Re: Q about parking tickets
Also - if you can't get them lowered, they will work out a payment plan with you, I'm pretty sure - I once had some crazy speeding ticket that was a lot of money - I was going like 70 in a 15 mph zone or something crazy like that, and owed hundreds - I paid it in 3 months...
