Interesting question. DD sleeps on her back or her side and is no where NEAR crawling at almost 8 mos. I'd be curious if there is a correlation!

I think there is a correlation. My DD never, ever goes on her belly. She hates it so much that i dont even try anymore. She is almost 13 months and still hates it. She ALWAYS sleeps on her back and side.

I think because of the lack of time spent on her belly, she now has to get PT. She qualifies for EI because she doesnt transition well. She can sit on her own and even walk but can't get to a sitting position on her own, she doesnt crawl and doesnt get to a standing position either.

So, I say yes them spending time on their belly has A LOT to do with it.

Ohh..this is inspiring me! DS has been sleeping on his belly for a while now(probably about since 10 weeks old) and he is rocking back and forth and ready to go..he just has to figure it out! He is just 6 months, so I hope he will crawl soon!! How exciting!

Interesting. How did your DD do with rolling? Mine seems to have very little interest ... she HAS rolled both ways, but it's certainly not a habit. She is quite content just sitting up and playing. I do put her on her belly but she is not a big fan (but I keep doing it). At what point did you realize your DD needed PT? I have mentioned this lack of rolling to the ped and she hasn't seemed concerned ... said that since she sits so well and twists her body side to side to get things that it seems she is doing okay. But how does one really know?

Steven was crawling by 6 months. He rolled early. Didn't sleep on his belly until he rolled, but he was ALWAYS on the floor.

DS started sleeping on his belly at 2 1/2 months when he started rolling early...I tried 3 different sleep positioners and woke up every hour to roll him back over b/c I was so worried but it was no use. The boy was going to sleep how he wanted. My ped. told me not to worry about it...

She would roll onto her belly at night at about 4 or 5 months - don't remember when exactly -

Honestly I think sleeping on the belly is as important as awake tummy time but I can't say it doesn't help. DD hated tummy time with a passion but I would make sure she got a few minutes each day - she was up on all fours very early but was up on all fours much earlier than she was interested in crawling. She was pulling to standing a while before crawling.

DD#2 has been sleeping on her belly since 8 weeks and obviously is not crawling yet (only 3 months old) but I'm curious to see if she will crawl early... will report back in a few monthsChat Icon
