Quad AFP Test
I have to make my appointment for my 11 week Quad AFP test next week.
Do they just take your blood or do they do a sonogram as well?
I'm getting nervous to take this test. I refused all the genetic testing with my first pregnancy.

Re: Quad AFP Test
I thought they do that test later. I could be wrong.

Re: Quad AFP Test
I didn't have that at 11 weeks. They drew blood (5 drops from my finger) for the Ultra Screen but that was it. I believe the test you're talking about is done a little later, between 16-20wks. Double check with your doctor to be sure.

Re: Quad AFP Test
That early on is usually the Ultrascreen. They measure the fold on the baby's neck and do a finger prick blood test for Down's. Then later at 16 weeks they will take blood again which will test for Spina bifida and trisomy 18 I believe.

Re: Quad AFP Test
The AFP is only one vial of blood but done between 16 and 18 weeks. Here is a list of testing from APA

Re: Quad AFP Test
I didn't do any testing w/Hayley either. This time I did both tests. At 13 weeks I had blood taken and a sono. Results came back excellent!! And 2 days ago I had the next test done. I am 16 weeks and they just drew 1 vial of blood and will get the results back next week.
Good luck!!

Re: Quad AFP Test
I had my AFP/Quad Screen at 15-16 weeks. There was no sonogram involved.

Re: Quad AFP Test
I asked the doctor last week, he said that AFP test HAS to be done after 14 weeks, or the results will be scewed. I am taking mine at 14w5 days.
Are you sure they are not talking about the ultrascreen? I would check.

Re: Quad AFP Test
I'm looking at my paper..and my doctor wrote down quad afp 11 weeks.
Great...now I'm going to get an unaccurate result and get even more worried.

Just make sure it is the same AFP test that we are talking about. Maybe there is a different one?

Re: Quad AFP Test
For me they took blood at my 12 week appointment when they did my ultrascreen and then had me come back 3 weeks later for the AFP.

Re: Quad AFP Test
you definitely need to check with your doctor. the quad screen is different from the AFP test - the AFP test is included in it, but it's also a test to measure hCG, estriol (estriol is an estrogen produced by both the fetus and the placenta) and Inhibin-A (a protein produced by the placenta and ovaries)
"The quad screen is a maternal blood screening test that is similar to the Triple Screen Test (also know as AFP Plus and the Multiple Marker Screening). However, the quad screen looks for not only the three specific substances evaluated in those tests (AFP, hCG, and Estriol) but also a fourth substance known as Inhibin-A.
The screen is essentially the same as the screening tests that look for only three substances, except the likelihood of identifying pregnancies at risk for Down Syndrome is higher through the evaluation of Inhibin-A levels. The false positive rate of the test is also lower."
"The quad screen test is performed between the 16th and 18th week of pregnancy."
