Quesiton about pre-school placement
I am confused about something. Given that BOCES is a public pre-school, and school districts everywhere are facing budget cuts, why aren't school districts forcing everyone to send their kids to BOCES? Am I missing something here? I had been told by one of DS's teachers that we can send him to whatever pre-school accepts him and has an opening, public or private. Why would the SD be willing to pay for private when BOCES is available? Please enlighten me. Thank you!

Schools are mandated to place your child in the least restrictive environment so BOCES may not be the best fit for all children. Also, just because BOCES is a public school does not mean the district doesn't pay. If you can prove a different district has a better special education program for your child your district can send your child to that school but will pay the other district. Both are public schools and there is still a fee. I also beleive that the private preschools that house special education programs also get state aide as well.
