Question?

I have been teaching in the city for 4 years and have decided to put in all my effort to try and get a teaching job in LI for next year.

I just got my certification in Students with Disabilities Birth-2 and 1-6 and I have my Childhood Ed Certification 1-6.

What do you think my chances are for getting a full time position in a LI school either regular ed or spec ed.

Be honest! Any info or help would be great!

Re: Question?

NYS is talking about budget cuts again....I think you may get a job, but I think it will be very hard and very competitive. All the teachers who couldn't get hired this year, plus all the new graduates.

I would also be really worried about job security on LI. I think that there is more job security in the city b/c of the volume of teachers.

You have 4 years in...you would be last in seniority if you went to LI. The worst thing that could happen in the city is you get excessed, but you still have a paycheck.

Re: Question?

I work in a LI school district....last year, for ONE elementary position, we had 300 applications.

I agree with the above poster. I would put my resume out there for LI districts to see, but hold on to your current job.

Re: Question?

Definitely hold on to your current job, but definitely look. as hard as it is, they are openings. people can't find jobs on LI because people have them, so obviosuly people get hired! :) people retire, enrollment changes require new positions, etc. you are dually certified and that is going to help a lot. when i interviewed on LI about 5 years ago, ALL the jobs were for special ed. and i think that trend is continuing. (I was hired for a special ed. job even though i also have elem. ed. cert.)

i would not leave your tenure and seniority in the city for a leave replacement position on LI. i would only leave the city if it was a tenure track position. if you take a leave replacement, you'll be out of a job in a year or less (unless they string you along as a leave) and then it's just as hard to find a job in the city.

Re: Question?

Be very very careful. I know two people that left great jobs. One on the island for another job on the island and one in the city..for tenure track position on the island. They are now both out of a full time job. The city person couldn't get back in because of the hiring freeze. The other is working part time. My advice...If u are miserable in your current school... i would try to get another teaching position in a different school/district in the city.

You want to be very careful about leaving your city job- definitely look, but it's risky. I don't know what the state cuts will do to the hiring freeze- also, you can't count on your seniority to really help you- if you leave and need to come back, you're in the same boat as lots of other people who want jobs.

Re: Question?

Thank you all so much for the advice. Thank goodness putting my resume out there won't effect my job in the city. It is a wait and see proposition.

Thanx again!
