Question about a Federal Holiday being on a weekend and time off
DH's (small family owned) company has it posted in their employee handbook that b/c 4th of July is on a Saturday this year, they're getting Friday off (same as my job, and probably most others)
DH's boss sent out an email today saying that he will research to see how many of their customers are closed on 7/3, eluding to the fact that he is considering NOT giving them a day off!
is his boss (owner) allowed to this? I mean, what if he tells them they all have to come in and completely forfeit this FEDERAL holiday??

Re: Question about a Federal Holiday being on a weekend and time off
I would think if it is a family run business, that they could work on federal holidays if requested. If daycare center is I work at is open on Memorial Day--- I had to go in.

Re: Question about a Federal Holiday being on a weekend and time off
doesn't matter if its a federal holiday-- they aren't the federal gov't.
the sticking point is that they put in WRITING that they were going to be closed on that day and now they are reversing that decision. I would assume it is legal to do this since companies can make policy changes like that.

DH already said he is not going to work that day, no matter what. his mother is flying in that weekend and shouldn't have to ask permission to take a day off that was already in the handbook as a holiday.
what his boss is thinking about doing is BS!

Re: Question about a Federal Holiday being on a weekend and time off
Any private company can change their policies when ever they like by simply issuing the new policy. My company used to close on President's Day but now we are open then and we are off the day after thanksgiving - this was dictated by an email or memo.
I hope your DH doesn't lose the holiday or that he gets the day off so your plans are not affected.

Re: Question about a Federal Holiday being on a weekend and time off
In a non-union environment, the company can make whatever changes it sees fit. Especially in this economy.
I read a somewhat cryptic email at work today reminding us that Friday is the holiday because the 4th is on Saturday, but that it could be subject to change based on business necessity.
My company no longer gives holidays for: MLK day Presidents' Day the day after Thanksgiving
I suspect Memorial Day would be next on the chopping block. I know of one major company that doesn't offer Memorial Day as a company holiday.

Re: Question about a Federal Holiday being on a weekend and time off
Even though the last two companies I've worked for posted specific holidays we were suppose to have off thru out the year they also included a clause that stated that some employees may be required to work on holidays dependant on the needs of the business.
I would definitely check the manual to see if they have such a clause.

they can do whatever they want to do.
I would just tell him to take the day as a vacation day no matter what.
Also, most businesses are not open on July 3 so it may be moot.

Bastid his boss is really such a POS! my DH works almost every single weekend. he gets 2 lousy weeks off per year and only the 'significant' holidays off (meaning no Presidents Day, MLK, Columbus Day). I really think is CRAP to expect your staff to forfeit what little time off they are SUPPOSED to get
