Question about Baptism Gift
I figured I would post here since you guys are the experts.
I haven't been to a christening where it wasn't a close family member, so I am not sure how much to give.
We are going to a baptism party at a restaurant (not fancy) - it is my best friends older sister (her baby).
What gift should we give? $$ is easiest, not sure how much. I was thinking $50 was to little but $100 seemed alot, so $75 (for DH and I) - we have to travel a few hours as well.
Thanks!

Re: Question about Baptism Gift
We give $100.
Horrible to say, but recently I went to a family member's Christening and I gave a savings bond because I didn't trust them NOT to spend the money on the party or something else. Otherwise, most of the time I give a check so they can invest it the way they see fit.

Re: Question about Baptism Gift
Thank for the responses. I'll probably do $75 or $100.
and I trust them to put it in the babys savings acct - otherwise it would have been a bond.

Re: Question about Baptism Gift
I would say try to figure out what they were spending per head and give at least that.
My dad spent $90 pp on Kristina's, and we had couples who gave $50.... He was MADDDDDDDDDD....
I totally understand that the reason for the christening is not the gift in itself, but I don't understand why people wouldn't at the very minimum cover the per head.

Re: Question about Baptism Gift
We had Joey's at a restaurant, and he recieved anywhere from $50 to $200--depending on how close the person was to us.

i truly don't like that thinking.
a christening is not about the gift. it's about the religious ceremony and celebration. if someone chooses to have an expensive party it is not the guest's responsibility to cover that!!! same as a wedding!
we just paid for DS's baptism this past sunday. we spent a third of that because we couldn't afford more. i would never want someone to cover their plate whether i spent $30 or $300. i want them to give what they can afford to (and WANT to) give. the party is not about making back what you spend. i put every dime DS made into his account. the money for the party came out of my pocket. i wouldn't even care if he "made" the same amount back because it's his money, not mine.
the money is not what a christening is about!!!
to the OP: people generally gave about $75-100 with some giving more and some giving less. regardless of the amount, all gifts were appreciated and put into DS's savings account.

yea i agree, i do get alil tempermental though with the whole christening thing viewed as a party..so that may be why..the gift isnt even really supposed to be an issue for something like this...ive actually NEVER thought to cover my plate for a christening, although im positive i always have..ive always just given based on what i could give..

The Christening isn't about making money to pay for the party, at least it shouldn't be to me. All the money that my children have received went right into their own bank accounts. DD had a smaller one because we couldn't afford the amount of people we had for DS.
So to say that someone should at least cover their plate is a little rude. You don't know someones financial situation and even if someone might have some money doesn't mean they should give more because you think they can..that just sounds greedy.
We give $100 for friends and $300 for family.

ITA!!!! I can never understand the part about people covering the cost per head.
IMO, people should host events that they can afford. Do not host events that they cannot afford and expect people to cover the cost.
They were a few guests who showed up to Ella's christening without a gift and I didn't feel anyway about it. It's not about the money or the gift for us. Once the guests enjoyed themselves that's all matter to us.
$100 or $150.
