Re: Question about Baptism/God parents and the Catholic Church..Help!
If the church follows Catholic tradition as it is, Godparents must be confirmed Catholic. You only need one Godparent, and you can have one Christian witness, meaning someone who is not Catholic but has been baptized Christian, it cannot be someone baptized Catholic that was not confirmed.
Your "standing" with the church should not affect your children being baptized.
All that being said, I feel I need to clarify that this has nothing to with my personal opinions, it is simply the facts of Catholic tradition.

Re: Question about Baptism/God parents and the Catholic Church..Help!
I didn't read the comments, so sorry if this repeats info. I have a relative that is the baptismal coordinator for a Catholic Church.
Yes, split the Catholic God Parents bc technically you only need 1 God Parent who has made ALL sacrements. The 2 non confirmed people can be each kids 2nd God Parent.
The fact that you're divorced/not married in the church should not matter AT ALL! They don't even ask this in our parish, they only check that at least 1 God Parent is Catholic with all sacrements.
Also, if you're given a hard time, call a different parish, bc they all seem to have their own interpretation of the rules on baptism requirements.

Thanks for all of the responses. I think we know what we need to do as far as the godparents go. As for me...I'll just see what they say. If they ask, obviously I wouldn't lie about my divorce. If they ask for proof of confirmation from my now DH, well then that will be an issue in itself.
The Godparent things seems to matter more than the parents' situation. I am Godmother to a baby with 2 moms, so obviously they weren't married in the Catholic church. One mom is a confirmed Catholic, the other was raised non religious. She is the one who carried him, but they are both his legal parents.
I am a confirmed Catholic but I didn't get married in the Catholic church & am not a member of a Parish. All I had to do was attend a class at the Parish that the Baptism was being held at. My DH ( also confirmed, but lapsed Catholic) is Godfather two to children & for one I think they just took the parents on their word & the other I think they just used the Godmother's "credentials".

I think it depends on the parish... when we signed up DS to be baptized they just told us that one godparent had to be catholic and the other catholic or christian. They never checked to see if they were confirmed or anything.

You being divorced is not an issue, the Catholic Church wants new members so they are not going to stop you based on this
Each parish is different, mine did not ask for proof that the Godparents were catholic, we just filled out a form and stated they were. Although these people were not confirmed, were they baptized ? that should be enough IMO but again depends on Parish.
Call anonymously and ask if god parents need to show records of their sacraments.

Question about Baptism/God parents and the Catholic Church..Help!
My SIL and my sister are remarried after being divorced without an annulment. They were both able to get their kids baptized in the Catholic church without a problem. Two different parrishes, too.

Question about Baptism/God parents and the Catholic Church..Help!
I'm glad you posted this. DS is almost 2 months and I want to do a baptism in a few months. I'm catholic and DH is no religion. We got married at our catering hall. I'm dreading going to a church and answering questions. Hopefully they won't give us a hard time.
Like people said all churches are different. Some churches ask nothing and some turn people away. I've heard it all. Let us know how it turns out.

Ok, everyone seems to think that my being divorced won't be an issue so that makes me feel a lot better! Yes, the second set of god parents have both been baptized.

I'm sorry but if my brother's son, who was born out of flipping wedlock, God forgive me, can be baptized in our Catholic church with my brother being unmarried - never married! Then it shouldn't be an issue for you! This is ridiculous. I love being Catholic but sometimes they irk me man, they really do. I really hope it works out -- update us!

I was refused by my Parrish (at that time) because I was an unwed teenage mother. That Catholic Church refused to baptize my son. Luckily I found another Catholic Church that happened to be in a bad neighborhood that was willing to baptize him. I had major problems with my faith for years after that experience. That was 28 years ago, I think the Catholics have had to come off their high horse position since then. I hope you aren't judged, it's not very Christ-like to judge.
What a terrible thing for a new young mother to have to go through. I can understand having problems with your faith after that experience. It is sad that I'm nervous to speak to someone because I fear I'll be judged. Especially by a church that I grew up within. I'm not deeply religious but it's still my parish. I received all my sacraments there. My brother was married there. My niece and nephews baptized there....I would be sad if I had to go someplace else. Thanks for sharing.
My husband's church, although its a very small parish, is similarly strict. I was baptized catholic but never confirmed - my husband was. At our initial meeting for our wedding, the priest told me "I was not a child of God" since I hadn't been confirmed and I had to sign a dispensation

Question about Baptism/God parents and the Catholic Church..Help!
I am not Catholic and my husband was baptized Catholic but never confirmed. We are both Godparents for our nephew who was baptized in a Catholic church. My SIL just told the priest everyone was Catholic and it never came up again.
I poked fun at her for lying to a priest. lol

Question about Baptism/God parents and the Catholic Church..Help!
I'm glad this came up as well, I've wondered if the fact I wasn't married in the church will be an issue.
I would call the rectory, you don't have to say who you are, just ask the question. Most churches have websites now. You may even be able to email your question.
Good Luck to you.
