My SIL locked the door. The first 2 nights he fell asleep on the floor. The third night he took himself back into bed.
Maybe get a gate for the door?

I can see a gate, but a lock?
Maybe there's a way it works, but suppose there's a fire or something in the house or in that room and the child becomes trapped in the room, and for whatever reason, you are blocked from reaching him/her?
Not judging anyone at all, but I can see this as a recipe for disaster.

Re: QUestion about CIO in their room at nite
I know there's a sleep technique where you actually sit on the floor of your DC's room until they fall asleep (facing away from them) and slowly inch your way closer to the door each night.
I'm not sure if it will work, but it seems to work on Supernanny
My cousins ended up putting a gate on their DD's room b/c she would fall asleep, but in the middle of the night she would wake up and wander around the house.

I understand that it sounds harsh.
It was just one of those regular doorknob locks, like you would have on the bathroom door.
She installed it so that it locked from the outside and not the inside.
I agree, it's a bold move that most parents would not do but hey, it worked for her and I don't think there was really a danger of being trapped.

Ive seen that done with "other" peoples children. I just couldnt get myself to do it. I cant imagine my dd crying behind a locked door. It would kill me. I will think about the gate though. Were you thinking the gate was a safety hazard in terms of a fire? or just the lock?
