Question about first ob visit blood work
I went for my first OB visit on Friday and they did the bloodwork. I think on average they take 4 - 5 vials for the OB panel tests, however my doctor asked me if I'm or my DH is from Jewish decent. When I said that my Grandfather is he ordered additional tests, and they ended up taking 11+ vials. Anyone else experience this? or know what they are testing for? I'm just curious.
Thanks

Re: Question about first ob visit blood work
There are several genetic disorders within Ashkenazi jewish population. It usually only shows up when both sides have the heritage though, and even then it is rare. They include cycstic fibrosis (also in caucasians), Niemann Pick, Gauchers, Tay Sachs, etc
The same goes for anyone of mediterranean (for thallasemia), african american (Sickle Cell anemia), or puritanical heritage (don't remember).
Don't worry about it....I got tested for abunch of stuff even though my DH and I are totally different ethnicities. We joke and say that any kids would be genetic disorder resistant! We're nerds.

Re: Question about first ob visit blood work
Hi Charly! I have to get bloodwork done for "jewish ancestry" too....I had my first ob/gyn visit on friday and they took six vials of blood- but I have to go somewhere else for the genetic tests. DH is catholic so I'm not too worried- but so much blood!

Re: Question about first ob visit blood work
I have to have for "Jewish testing" since my DH is Jewish. I don't know the correct terminology, but I know Taysachs is more likely to occur in people w/ Jewish ancestory. I'm not too concerned since I'm not Jewish, but I am going for the test.

Re: Question about first ob visit blood work
My grandma was Jewish, and once I put that down on the form they took so much more blood. Everything turned out fine, though.
