Re: Question about Hasidic Jews.
I've never heard this!!!
BUT for other religious questions, like "what is the difference between kosher and kosher-for-Passover?" - I've searched www.askMoses.com

Re: Question about Hasidic Jews.
As far as I know, most do not shave their heads, but they wear wigs in public. It has to do with being modest outside of the home.

Re: Question about Hasidic Jews.
The Ultra orthodox are required to cover their heads, since most wear wigs its just easier to either shave it close or keep it really short. Some of the wigs costs thousands of dollars, you wouldn't even know it was a wig.
Some more conservative sects just cover their hair with a covering called a snood.

Re: Question about Hasidic Jews.
I believe the hair is only meant to be seen by the husband? But I could be thinking of Amish people.

I was just informed of this last week, they wear a wig because the hair on top of their head matches the hair in other places and no other man should ever think of what that could look like..its something along those lines.

I don't know about Hasidic women, but I have many Orthodox friends who do not shave their heads, but always cover it either with a hat, a wig, or a snood in the presence of men other than their husband. It has to do with modesty, but unfortunately, I can't give you a good explanation for it.

i used to live in a predominantly hasidic community and always knew that the woman had to shave her head and wear a wig after marriage, but never really knew why??

I have known plenty of Hassidic and ultra orthodox women- and this has nothing to do with it.
No one but a woman's husband should see a woman's true beauty, so married women wear wigs, snood, or a hat to cover up their hair.
Some sects of Chassidim do have women shave their heads, but most just cut their hair so its easier to wear the wig.

I believe this is a common practice in lubovitch women.
I believe that like muslim women wearing a hijab, it's a bout modesty, but I don't know why it has to be shaved

Not just Lubovitch women... all very orthodox women (I grew up in a Lubovitch synagogue and was married by the rabbi I grew up with). And my father's entire side of the family are Hasidic
My SIL and BIL are very Orthodox, she wears a wig but her hair is not shaved. Niether is my Lubovitch rabbi's wife. She too wears a wig, but her head is not shaved.
It has to do with modesty. This is why they also wear shirts that cover their elbows and long skirts. A womans hair can turn a man on and is only meant to be seen by her husband.
My 3 year old nephew (SIL's son) always says to me if I'm wearing a V-neck shirt "Aunt Michelle, you have a hole in your shirt"
