Question About Insurance...
I am a little unsure about what to do about this. I have my insurance from my job and I am also under my husbands He's got GHI for medical and Empire Blue Shield for Hospital.
Now I've heard about the birthday rule where whoever's birthday comes first is the insurance that gets billed first. That would be mine which is Oxford Freedom. Should I cancel my insurance? and stay under my husbands?
I've spoken to Empire Blueshield and they said not to cancel because whatever costs mine doesn't pick up then they I always have a secondary insurance company to submit the claim to. If it's only one insurance and there is a balance to be paid on something that my insurance didn't pick up then there won't be another insurance that will pick up the cost. The rep said as long as I don't have to pay for my insurance then why cancel it. which is true, my company pays the insurance policy for us.
Now the problem is neither Oxford nor GHI won't pick up the cost for a Lactation Consultant (it's considered a fringe benefit that they don't pay for ... ) How annoying, which means it would have to come out of our pockets and god knows how much that would be...
what do you ladies think?

Re: Question About Insurance...
If you dont pay for your insurance, I would NOT cancel it. GHI doesnt pay 100% a LOT of the times. My uncle had a great GHI plan thru the post office yet we were left with a LOT of bills when he passed away.
I work for EMpire, and no they wont pay for a lactation counselor...but the hospital nurses show you how to nurse when your there after you have the baby so I dont think they are worth the $$$ anyway...
Your Empire policy should cover most of everything and you can submit co pays and such to GHI...

Re: Question About Insurance...
I have Oxford Freedom and didn't pay a thing when I delivered my son. Also, I only paid a copay for my initial visit to confirm the PG and then didn't pay a thing.
As for the LC, where are you giving birth? I gave birth at LIJ and they LCs there that come see you for free. Also, if you have any issues after you go home, you can call them or go there to meet with them for free.

Oh cool. Yeah I spoke with Oxford Freedom and they said that they cover the Hospital Stay. Do they cover Dr.'s bills though?
I mean it sounds I like I should just hold on to both. My husband's insurance company I don't cancel my policy espcially since I don't pay for it...

Re: Question About Insurance...
I haven't chosen the hospital yet but my doctor is affiliated with two hospitals...Flushing and the New York Hospital of Queens.

Yeah they paid for all the doc's bills too.
I think all hospitals now have LCs. I would call the hospitals to see.
I think you made the right decision about not cancelling. It doesn't hurt to have too much ins.

Re: Question About Insurance...
Funny I was just saying I didn't pay anything and TODAY I receive a bill from LIJ for $500. I called Oxford and it's a copayment for being an inpatient at a hospital So keep your other ins. Maybe that one will cover the $500 copay your Oxford won't cover. Sorry about giving you the wrong info.

Re: Question About Insurance...
Oh no that's ok. I think I heard about this co-payment thing anyway.
Yeah that's why I am holding on to the other insurance too.
